WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1978, PAGE 19 Close, scores in district soccer action mean lots more exciting games Some tight-scoring games were played i the Durham Inter-District Soccer League in recent weeks. .PEE WEE Sept.' 8 at Peel Park, Peteborughdefeated the Longmuir Builders of Whitby 2-1, the onlv Wliitby goal being scored by Fred D'Andrea. At haîf-time it was 1-0 for Whitby. This was a two- game total goal series with the second game going at Peterborough on Sept. 16. these teams are very even, however, after a good first haîf for Whithiy, the visitors :came on strong, and euizdafter only three minutes. A second goal 4ýýo]lowed shortly afterwards to win the game for Peter- borough. Sept. 10 at Peterborough, Peterborough and Carretto Restaurant and Tavern of Whitby tied 1-1. Richard Greaves scored the only Whitby -goal. Haif-time score was 1-0 for Peterborough. This aiso was the first of a two-game total goal series with the second game to be held later in the week at Whitby's Peel Park. In the second game Sept. 13, Carretto Restaurant shu 't out Peterborough 3-0, with goals by Tony Aibis, George Rossier and Wayne Crosson-. Goaltender Bill Lamont got the shut-out. Whitby won the series,ý four goals to one and, advances to the final against either Oshawa or Ajax. Date and. time are stili to be set. JUNIOR Sept. 7 at Peel Park, Oshawa defeated Ferrco Engineering 6-2 with Dave Wilcox and John Longmuir scoring 'the *only Whitby goals. On July 31, Ferrco tied Oshawa 1-1 in the scheduled league game at Peel Park. However, it was found that Oshawa was playing with one illegal .player and they were ordered to replay the game. The original game had given Oshawa the league titie by one point, so Whitby had to win the replay game to get the titde. However, this was not to be, and Oshawa took the championship by three points, having won two and iost one against Whitby. Sept. 10 at Dunmore Park, Westshore, Ferrco Engineering shut out West- shore 1-0 with a goal by Mark Hoogkamp. Goaltender Earl Hand got the shut-out. Kerry Lang of Whitby wa s ejected from the game at the 10)-minute mark of the second haîIf and up. until tha t point, Westshore did not have a shot on the Whitby net. With Whitby playing with only 10 men for the final 35 moinuites the game evened out having scoring opportunities. Ferreo opened the scoring alter offly two minutes when Mark Hoogkarnp converted a long Ken Beattie throw-in. Despite the fact that the first haif was played almost ail in the Westshore haif of, the field, Ferrco couid not capitalîze on good mid-ficid play. Whitby'now goes on to play Oshawa in the second round.. EXHIBITION GAME4 In an exhibition game at Ajax, the Longmuir Builders, of Whitby defeated Ajax 741 with two goals each by Bob Sherman, and Fred D'Andrea, and one each by John Schell, Ricky Wood and Rýob Longmuir.
