PAE 12, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20,1978, WHIITBY FREE PRESS Whitby Downtown By, John Roberts Those, merchants who'didn't find the time or have the interest to attendý the inaugural meeting of the Retail Merchants Association last Wednesday missed a dandy. Details will be found ehsewhere in this newspaper. I had made a mistake before the meeting, however. 1, had predicted that there would be a total of 13 merchants in attendance, but this was way off. When the meeting calhed to order, there were two merchants and two representatives of the media present, in addition to the executive. Not what you would cail a turn-away James P. A. Prentice DISPENSING OPTICIAN 400A Dundas St., West (ot Kent) Whitby, Ont. Li N 2M7_ Bus. 666-1646 Res. 668-0067 The Pinie lidge Jaycees, the, first all female Jaycee unit in the Durham Region is looking for members from Whitby. The unit, which covers the area fromn Pickering to Cobourg, is, holding its charter night Sept. 23 at Zolly's Forum in the Oshawa Centre.,~ Special guest speaker for the evening wilI be Maureen SE ITENIIE R(:I.ARAII(: McTeer, w'ife of Federal Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark. Tickets are available by. calling Jeanette Belko at 579-6131. Historically the Jayces were known as the Junior Chamber of Commerce, but this international oraniza- tion has as its credo, a behief in the brotherhood of man, economlic justice, free enter- prise, government' by laws, the value of the human personality and service to humanity. Another facet of the organization is the personal development of its members. Anyone interested In joining the Pine Ridge Jaycees may cal Donna Endicott at 723-0008. crowd. It's tough to run a meeting wtth this kind' of representation, but'to give crédit where crédit, is ý due, -Bey Watts as chairperson was able to make a very worthwhile meeting out of a, potential disaster, which certainly indicates that her selection to the chair of the Associationi will provide some dynamic leadership to a situation thât could certainhy use a push at tl)isstage of its existence., The thing that w4s so surprising about this meeting was the amount of enthusiasm engendered for the acivities planned around the autumn and Christmas seasons. It was a good feeling, really, tQ see eveni a small niumber of people interested in the direction that the downtown is moving. I can't believe that there are people working on this committee for, nothing other than their personal benefit. The entire philosophy of 'the group or the plans being made just don't support a -negative theory of this sort. Therefore, enthusiasm plus community concern equala very good and positive starting point. In any case, the Association wilI have a breakfast meeting on Thursday morning at 7 a.m. .tha t's enithusiasm) to finalize plans for a Christmas promotion. Details again are elsewhere in this newspaper. It seems to me that if as much enthusiasm is shown" in carrying out plans that have been formulated as has been exhibîted thus far, the Christmas season should prove both interesting and rewarding. But we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves. This is only September. And instead of writing a post-mortem on this fledgling group, it's good to be able to show some promise for the future. Yet it's too much to expeet any small collection of individuals to take on the promotion of the entire retail sector «f downtown Whitby. There is now good reason to dispense wit'i the overpowering apathy s0 obvious before. Downtown Whitby now has the opportunity to live up to its potential, to revitalize and quit playing step-sister to the municipalities which surround fier. The organization now exists, commnunity identity is beginning to play a dominant role. and the leadership seems to be there. The Association needs the support itdeserves, the chance that is owed to it, to gain the strength necessary to carry out its objectives.
