WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1978, PAGE 9 Thnis doil helps n urses save lives. at Dr. Rudd yHospital It's a typical afternoon at the Dr. Joseph 0. Ruddy Generali1lospital in Whitby and Maureen Gmnitrowicz, the Ilospital staff education co-ordinator,, and her students are playing with a doil. The doîl is "Resuci-Ann" and the class is practising rescue breathing, and cardiopulmonýary resuscita- tion mon itored by electronie sensors and a tape readout, ail (-ortained within the body of1 hie doil. ý "The tape is almost our Bible",', s ays Mrs. Gmlitrowicz, the only staff member' at the Ruddy Hospi- tai ,,ilh Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) pro- gram instructor status, "lbecause it ensures, by graph, that rescue emer- gency breathing and CPR is being administered properly. t CPR - or basic life support - is ar emergency first aid procedure that consists of recognizing rcspiratory and cardiac. ro, and starting the jwt ,jer application of cardiopulmonary resuscita- tion and resuce breathing to maintain lifc until a victim recovers ý;ufficiently to be transportedi, or until advanced 111e support, suchi as defibrillation, is availa- ble. *C131taid ils new standards have heen in effect at the Joseph 0. luddy since April, when the staff education co- ordinator began teaching the programn to nursing, physio- therapy, laboratory and X-ray personnel. "These are key people because of their direct patient contact, and we hope to broaden our scope to teach everybody," she explained. Basically, the course .involves a series of five one-hours lectures, supple- mented with demnonstrations and practice. Or, as Mrs. Gmitrowicz puts it, "Students must do a lot of practice on their own froc time." Those who do qualify af ter the CPR- course are issued certificates fromn the Ontario lijart Foundation. But students must first achieve 85% on an examina- tion, and if they fail, must rewrite the examination - and even after passing the examination, those who qualify must be re-eertified every year. The underlying purpose of certification is to maintain an adherence to uniform national staindards established or recognized by the American Ueart Associa- tion and the Canadian Heart Foundation. Until the emergence of Resuci-Ann in North Amýerica in 1961, there was no standard method of proper resuscitation and no certificate procedure. Before the standards were_ established, it was used almost exclusively with nursing staffs. Iiih i erresuce breath- ing iýý tnol ais easy as it seems. "I êioutght it would take mce *orever, and that's why 1 -got s0 involved when some- one having a difficult time with the course, makes it," says Mrs. Gmitrowicz. '*"I's a vital process, well Worth fIh( effort, Because of our I':(,afîon here at the hospital, it may take a Physician five to seven minutes Iho arrive, and that's- where 11 becomes vital. About z4 hospilal staff members have learned the process their own time. "They've heen fantastic. They fheir evenings and .. te im-es, and they -iv c thlused," says h(ir of her students. At the Dr. Joseph O. Ruddy Hospital in Whitby, to a dedicated littie group, a tape is like a Bible, and Resuci-Ann is everbody's favourite doll. A LIIFE-SAVER Student Jane Spratt (R) discusses one of the fine ds of C.P.R. with student Jan Lyons and instructor ircen Gmitrowicz.
