Whitby OPP reported a silver Ventura driven by Christof Janke of Austria pulled out of a private drive- way into the path of the gravel truck, criven by Gordon Dennis of Brooklin. Mrs. Janke was treated for minor injulries at the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital, -fâllowing the collision, but nobody else was hurt. A recent staff report to Whitby council stated that only seven per cent of building permits issued in the first six months of 1978 were for industrial and commercial buildings, and 93 per cent were for residen- tial buildings.0 MayorJim Gartshore says he nas been talking with eight major residential developers in the town of Whitby about bringing industry into the town. Mayor Jim Potticary, of Oshawa is also making plans for an Oshawa industrial promotion program, which includes the formation of an industrial development committee similar to the one lustry that served Oshawa before regional governmnent began in 1974. The major emphasis of the Oshawa committee will be to develop' Stevenson Industrial Park, adjacent to the Oshawa-Whitby border. Mayor Potticary suggested that an approacb be made to the mayors of Whitby and Ajax to send another industrial promotion excursion to Europe similar to the trip taken by the regional officiaIs this spring. The mayors were supposed to go on the regional trip but a cutback in provincial funding prevented them fromn making the trip. At last his wish is about to come true, for the reunion is set for Sept. 6. 1978 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.rn. The Model Sehool as such, no longer exists. It is now the Florence M. Heard Sehool, where the reunion will be held. In former days it was also called Dundas Street School. The Dundas Street Schoel iton set foi was built in 1875 and opened in January 1876 as a Model School which was the name of a sehool, for training teachers. The pupils were known as "Modelites," and as late as the *1920s, the school was still used for training teachers. Mr. Sturgess, a graduate of 1922, says the September reunion is basically an opportunity to meet old friends for anyone who attended the school up tii 1935. The school will be open for a drop-in style reunion, with tea, coffee, cakes and cookies being served. About four months ago Mr. Strugess and five other former students at the school began compiling a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of graduates of the Model School. So far they have about 65 names, but expect to have contacted about 100 graduates by the time of the reunion. Many are stili living in the Oshawa-Whitby-Porty Perry area, but others are coming frorn Lindsay, Peter- borough, Tononto, Ottawa and Barrie, says Mr. Sturgess.
