This group, replacing the former Whitby Downtown Business and Professional Association, was frmed in response to the needfoe a stroig, representative body composed of the. retail section of the business within the new redevelop- nent area in downtown Whitby, Executive members are, Bey Watts (Chairperson), Steve 'Henry, Pat Wilcox, Dorothy Bryant, John Roberts and Jim- Cheyne. This group wiil work closeiy with both- the Board of Management and the Chamber of Commerce. Af ter the Dôwntown Whitby Central Business District Improvement ARea Committee submitted a list of names to council for the formation of a Board of Management to administer funds for the Improvemnent ARea, it was feit that a retail merchants organization was necessary to' deal with activities that fell outside of the mandate of the Board. These activities would include various promoional and advertising campaigns centred on the retail section rather than activities which were beneficial for the general good of both retail and professional person, while the Board wil concern itself with. As well, the inactivity of the previous Association during the time that the t redevelopmeflt by-law was being organized indicated that a new organization was necessary. Retail merchants will be informed during September regarding the aims and objectives of the new Association as well as ful particulars of memt>ership. A Christmias promotion willl be high onthe agenlda forthe first meeting.
