The barn was featured in magazine testimonials for the company that supplled the concrete for the foundation. Mr. Smith married Sarah Crawfortb, daugbter of Joshua Crawforth, one of Witby's early settlers, and they had a farnily of eight children, four girls and four boys. Mrs. Smith was born in 1845 on the boat on which ber family crossed the Atlantic Ocean from England to seek their fortune in Canada. Mr. Smith was noted for bis interest in local political affairs, and served nearly every year for 30 years on the Town Council. The span of bis service covered from about 1880 to 1911, representing the South Ward, as Port Whitby was called. Because, of failing health he was persuaded not to seek re-election to council in 1912, but won a seat on the Board of Education by acclamation. Mr. Smith was Chairman of the Streets Committee of council for many years, and this very responsible position demanded much of his time. John Smith was a lifelong niember of the Metbodist Church and a Conservative ini polities. During 1911, the provincial government was carrying out negotiations to purchase the farms which now make up the Wbitby Psycbiatric Hospital property. Mr. Smith was the one hold-out, and would flot seil his farm, even for the $30,000 offered by the governmnent. At this point, death intervened, and the government got the farm. On Jan. 18, 1912, Mr. Smith died at the age of 70, and his funeral was one of the largest ever seen i Whitby. As was the custom of those days, the funeral was held at his home, and so large was the crowd that 300 people had to stand out in the cold for more than an hour because there was noroom for themn in the house. More than 60 carniages and automobiles formied the funeral procession to Union Cemetery- for one of the moàt respected farmers of the district. After the Ontario government purchased Bayside, the brick bouse was stuccoed over, and today it is much changed fromn its original appearance. However, the front door la one of the finest of its pemiod in Whitby. With the demolition of Grove House (Bayside), Whitby loses yet another link with its illustrious past.
