Friday - Intermediate Classes - Room 1, Intermediate As I mentioned in my last column our edi tor very generously dispatched, me to the Bermuda Triangle for what he termed, "a long-needed rest'. Just how long a rest he intended I wasn't sure but I must admit the merest fiicker of suspicion crossed mny mind when I discovered that1 my air fllght had an in-flight mechanic. And worse, as' George Carlin points out, it was to be a non-stop flight but I preferred that it make one stop anyway to let me off at > 'y destination. Well anyway the flight went without incident. I amused myslef in, the washroomn by trying to figure out how any normal-built human being could possibly sit on the throne without getting bis knees caught in the plumbing under the seat. I neyer did figure it out so while I crouched there tryig to wash my hands at the sink and bracing myself because of my' nearly fractured, knees I- accidentally flushed the toilet again with my backside. The surprise of cold water lapping the backs of my legs made me jump, I straightened up, dented a ceiling, tile, quickly fumbled with the latch and fell out the washroom'door almost into the arms of the stewardess. Although no words were spoken I instinctively knhew I wouldn't get another drink from her for t heý rest of the trip. 1l1 At mny seat I rooted around in the bottom 0of the magazine pouch and found some rather entertaining magazines. -One completely explained the workings of a, parachut, howto deploy lt,hOw to steer it and how ,to h ide, It once you have landed s0 the enemny1 won't find it and know. you're around. The other booklet was a language. book giving key phrases to be used so you could master at least, the bare basics in case you were dropped in the wrong zone and woundup parachuting into North Korea. Both bookletswere pûblished by the.1United States Air Force and were rather tattered by much mrore exciting than some of the Womnen's magazines whlch showed out-of-date styles and recipes i which you, actually prepared ingredients with your own bare bands. I trled to warm up to the stewardess, hoping she mlght forgive me for my hasty exit from the washroom, and so I inqulred as to aproximately what timne we might be landlng on the Island, "way out in the middle of the Triangle. She quickly glanced around to see if anybody else bad heard my question and replied, 111m sorry sir but we're flot ailowed-to discuss that"l. Maybe George Carlin was right; maybe this really was a non-stop flight. ,Well of coure al good thlngs must come to an end and it wasn't too long before we started losing altitude (purposely I hoped> and we were comning into the Island of San Salvador, my destination in the Bahamas. The usual things bappened, the lights went on for nosmoking, fasten your seat belts, and a few of the seasoned travellers assumed a bent-over position i their seats with piilows under their heads. I gazedout the window wanting to have a look at the isl- id aswe came in and 1thought back tothe first tîme 1 evt r landed at this ittle Island, far out in the Atlantic.
