WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1977, PAGE 9 Jaycees seek five outstanding young Canadians Is there an outstanding individual living in or around Whitby? If there is, the Whitby Jaycees would like to - know. For the 10th year the Canada Jaycees in conjunc- tion with Rothmans of Pall Mall are sponsoring the Five Outstanding Young Canad- ians program, to find five of the country's best young men or women for recognition. Some of the recipients in the past have been Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot, Alan Eagleson, Russ Jackson, Ed Schreyer, Paul Godfrey, David Crombie, Dr. Ian Smith and George de Rappard. A flurry of construc- fîc tion activity resumed on the fif building this spring but it did in not last long. The site has M been vacant for several to months, with little or no con- it struction activity taking place. bu Richard Spence, pu DurhamhRegion's develop- th ment officer for Whitby, says the project is not dead yet; pr perhaps it is only sleeping. w "An increasing numnber of parties are interested in m( carrying this on but no con- pL mittment of dollars has been sh made yet," he said recently. a] "The prospects of it being o completed and run properly fr are pretty good." it Mi. Spence says the Of hotel's owners intend to com- w plete the building in the tc stages, opening the dining Gas. test wanted at dump No building should be commenced on a former san- itary landfili site in the Hopkins Street Industrial Park until the site is tested for methane gas, an engineer informed council last week. Specialists in methane gas have advised the public works departnent that there should be a two stage pro- gram consisting of a prelim- inary study to see if the gas is being produced at the site, and if there is a hazard, that a more detailed evaluation be made. There is concern that methane gas trom old landfill sites could be a hazard to adjacent industrial develop- ments. The estimated cost of the first stage if $1,500 and stage two may cost up to $8,000 the town was in- formed. Since there is no money for such a study in this year's budget, the matter has been referred to the 1978 budget discussions. Experts recently check- ed out a former landfill site south of Brooklin near Grove- side Cemetery, and deter- mined no further investigation is necessary there. Whitby's former mayor Newman was a runner-up w years ago. Candidates have to be ween the ages of 18 and and be Canadian citizens. The Whitby Jaycees are king for nominations of ople from this town who ght be worthy of the out- nding Canadian awards. Then they will start ork on the tower. 'The problern is dif- culty in getting front-end nancing for the hotel dustry in general," says r. Spence. 'It is far hetter sell to a group to operate if the building is completed t we need stronger local in- at to get people to put in e money to finish it." The roof is on and the oject, in Mr. Spence's ords,"goes in fits ànd starts. The hotel was corn- enced in 1974,but has been agued by financial hard- ips ever since.
