WHITBV FREE PRES§, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1977, PAGEF 15 is br'olcen up after 3Oyearls of service, operated out of Port Whitby, but, Joe Stevens and his son held the record for the long- est commercial fishing operation from this harbor. Joe Stevens Sr. had three boats in succession until [947 whenhte iaunched-the Shirley S., named after his niece Shirley Stevens. One of the boats was built outside the Stevens house on Dufferin Street in the 1920s. It was called the "Eileen" after young Joe's sister. Wanting to expand their operations, Joe Sr. and Jr. went to Georgian Bay in 1944 to purchase a bigger boat, but found it had a broken keel. They came back to Whitby and decided to built their own boat at the end of Brock Street, and launched it in thie summner of 1947. The "Shirley S." was 40 feet long, with a 12-foot beam and a three-foot draught. t xvas painted grey, with white pine planking and white oak ribs. It was powered by a 1926 Studebaker 8 engine, which was replaced in 1961 by a' 1952 -Buick 8 engine, one of the last straight 8's made by General Motors. Within the next week an energy management study will begin at the Dr. J. O. Ruddy General Hospital. Hospital Administrator John Kunetsky said that the Ontario Ministry of Health asked the Dr. Ruddy and about, 19 other hospitals in the province to have this study undertaken to see in what way the hospitals can conserve energy in their various systems. Consulting engîneers from the firm of Okins, Leipciger, Cpulinskas, Kaminker and Associates, of Don Milis, will visit thehospital, and work with the hospital's staff to review- all energy consuming systems in the building, said Mr. Kunetsky. This will include the heat- ing,' cooling and electrical plants, hot water, ighting, air exhaust systems, and process- ing equipnent such as sterali- zers arid washers. The.,iospital staff will produce records of costs to be studied by the consultants. The $6,000 to $7,000 study wilI be financed by the federal and provincial govern- ments, said Mr. Kunetsky. The findings of the study Joe Stevens and his son had a fishing shack where the Texaco oul tanks are now. In 1938 Argo Petroleum built the tanks, and provided Mr. Stevens with a new fishing shack at the foot of Brock Street, which stood until 1970. Beside the fishing shack were racks for drying nets. The Shirley S. would fish the waters from Ontario county to the United States border in the middle ôf Lake Ontario, and the fish wasshipped from Whitby to Toronto, New York and Chicago. It wvas fresh fish, packed in cru shed ice and shipped by rail says Mr. Stevens Jr. In the 1930s, before any- one had heard of tiie Word ..pollution" Joe Stevens Jr. was taking water samiples at Whitby harbor and sending thein to the provincial government. Ûy 1950, the pollution had killed the fishing industry and young Joe Stevens becarne a truck driver. The Shirley S. reinaincd moored at the harbor for 10 years, before it got a new lease on Ilfe iri I960, when will likely lead to certaini savings ln the hospital, he said, and if new equipment is recommended to save money over a long term, the Ministry of Health will provide funds for its purchase. IHe was able. to ship 12,000 pounds of smelt in one season,. lasting fromn January to May, but in 1963 it proved unpro- fitable and he went back to trytck driving.___ In 1965 the "Shirley S." took to the late for the last timie for a few weekend smelt fishing excursions. For three years afterwards it was beached on the MeNamara marine property, and then moved to Mr. Stevens' back- yFa 1I realized it was too much to rebulit it, so I eut it up over the past two years", said Mr. Stevens. No w ail that reniains of the Shirley S. is the keel, some planking, and the 1952 Buick engine. Mr. Stevens estimates that his boat was probably the last commercial fishing boat 011 western Lake Ontario, and he is the last of the commercial fishermen to operate out of Whitby harbor on a fuil-time basis.
