Whitby Chamberc -Jim QMsiU -marie Burgess -Robin 6Lyon -Mariefle Byrorfl -Sharon Lyonl t No. 460 wof the.: areau of Toronto ofComerce EDITORIAL Our twinning with Whitby, England has a real chance for development By BRIAN WINTER, Community Editor August certainly seems to have been the 1month for twinning as far as Whitby and the Free Press are concerned. White local residents were officially greeting their friends froin Longueuil Quebec, which lias been twinning with Whitby for nine vears, I was off to England to make a semi-official visit to Whitby Yorkshire, which was twinned with our town only last March. As 1 have said iin my articles on the visit, wvhich appe.ar iin this week's paper and will continue next week, there is a real potential for making the inost of twiinningx with Whitby Enaland, and a real interest in our towft1.ý*OWfl by a number of citizens of the original Whi tby. Ernest Hutchinson, who as inyor of Whitby EngIaîîd carne here ini Mardi anc"took part ini the officiai cerernonies Iinking our two towns. is very înuch interested in seeing young people from t he twvo hitbys take part in student exehanges. Hie wants to see sehools, clubs and other orgranizations twinned atid visits made, and already St. H-ilda's School is interested in re-establisliing the links it had with the Ontario Ladies' College during the Second World War when students from Whitby England wvere evacuated to WYhitby Canada. Twinning with 1Vhitby Englaîid is nothing ilew, as I fouind out during rny visit. Soldiers from our town were wvelcomed ini Whitby Yorkshire when they were on leave during the war, and since 1953 there has bee'îa' periodic correspondence between our two towns. In 1 957 a tW4îi,*z g wassý--roposed from the English side of thé ocean, btt*eit appears to have corne to nothing. ln the interests of wvorld fellowship and getting to know more about the town for which we are named, we should do ail we can f0 sec that the twinning between Whitby Yorkshire and Whitby Ontario grows and prospers as does our twiinniig with Longueuil. An ocean rnay separate our t% comm-unities, but there is a close ink between us. Durig my visit, 1 saw much evidence of this. We both have to contend with a ilew form of regional governiment, we both have harbors which are or are about to be devel>ped, and we both have similar schools, clubs and organizatins which could benefif fromf-winning. The ounil-f the town of Whifby, Ontario has of -the distance andi involved, buf flîcre isg ail ongoiîîg prograiun of the test or lime. The Free Press anîd 3IrL<yestablîshîed a ,si)irit ofn(i ilnisg. Oilly a few (lays later,'I as commuîiity editor of f lie Free Press wvas able to mneet Mr. Siater and menmbers of lis staff and write a couple of articles about our Whitby for his paper. In turn, he fook( notes on my visit, and had featuired thle story of the transaflantielphione cal on tie front page of the Gazette. I would like f0 take thiis opportunity of persona lly tla nking Ernest anîd Ellen 1-ILtciins()n and Flarry and Irenle Best for t heir hiospitalify during rny visit to Whitby Englaild. Their visit to our Whitby inii March starfed the twinning of our two fown*is, and iny visit, althouglu plained before the twinining fook place, ended up iTILch as a recipricol visit, for many gifts for organizations ini the two towns were cxchuanged. We have a good beginning for a lasting associationi between the f wo Whitbys, forged in this year 1 977. Let's make sure if does mot die out like the proposed twinining of 20 years ago. &LNY MISTAKE.S?
