WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 1977, PAGE 9 are higehlig*hts of Whitby England vit ed by sait water blown in froni the sea. Bell ringers, learning their trade, were pulling on long ropes at the1 base of the church's tower, providing the truly English sound of village churchi bells throughout our visit 10 the1 abbey.1 This church with its great wooden galleries, box pews and ancient nmemorials,i represents more than 850 years of history. The church is stili in active use and our visit tinfortUnately was cut short because a service was about to begin. Foflowing Our visit to St. Mary's we descen ded the 1 99 steps (we counted themn to be suire) which broughit us into ihe valley of the miouth of the River Esk and the old part of Whitby with its narrow winding streets and sniall shops. On one of these streets wvas a shiop selling Whiitby jet, a black stone which xvas popular for jewellery siiice the 1 9th century. In the evening a numnber of representatives of Whitby organizations assemibled aI Harry Best's home in our honor. These people repre- sented groups which had exchanged gifts during thé Hutchinson's and Best's visit here in March. 1 presented small Whitby flags 10 Mrs. Betty Stone of the Whitby Red Cross; Mr. Stainthorp; Graham Wilson, Whitby station officer for the North Yorkshire County Fire Department; Dr. Frederick Akeroyd, president of the Whitby branch of the British Legion; and Don Harrop, a police constable for the County of North Yorkshire. I presented greetings from the Whitby Ontario Red Cross 10 Mrs. Stone and Mr. Williams gave me a plaque for our Whitby Fire Department which had been made by the memnbers of the Whitby fire station. Mr. Stainthorpe gave an informative slide show and talk on the history of Whitby Abbey and many of the local residents said they learned much they did not know about their own home town. Mr. Stainthorp said the abbey was built of three kinds of stone, fromn Whitby, Sneaton and Aislaby, and could hold more than 1,000 people. It was the mnost promni- nantly positioned abbey in Europe, second only to Monte Casino in Italy, he said. There are three succes- sive abbeys represented in the ruins-Saxon, Norman and English Gothie. Other interesting facts that came 10 light that evening were that Aislaby stone was used to build London Bridge, and Bram Stoker, the author of "Dracula" once lived in Whitby. We were told that the Dracula Society, paid a recent visit to Whitby in bis honor, I1lLch to the initerest of local residents.
