I Region s. comnput"er q uestiz iail foui By NANCY BOWES Staff Writer Durham Regional Couincil has tabled a recommendation by the Finance Committee that the region enter into a lease agreement with Sperry- Univac Corporation for the lease of a computer at an ave rage mon thly rate of $8,539. The region currently buys computer time from the Canada Systems Group, a Toronto-based company, at an average monthly rate of $13 ,000. Whitby Mayor Jim Gart- shore asked why the Region of Durham could not rent timne on the, City of- Oshawa computer, which, according to Oshawa Mayor Jim Potticar>', is under-utilized. Finance Committee Chairman John Aker replied that the time-sharing could flot be worked out. Councillor John DeHart asked if there had been a meeting with Oshawa to try to resolve the time-sharing of the comput2r equipment. Mr. Aker said that there had flot been such a meeting, but added that Oshawa had not replied to a letter sent eighteen months ago request- ingy the city to consider a sharing agree ment. Mr. Aker said that the Region of Durham requfires its own systemn because of the size, of 'the region. Jack Gatley, Finance Commissionl- er, stated that the main problern in a sharing agree- ment is that the region would 44want instant access to the compuiter during the day".
