No2.. t . - Rd Educators throughout the Durhiam Region are taking a close iook at a special musical fitness program introduced last month by Whitby's E. A. Fairmian Public School. Since Feb. 28,the students and staff have been participat- ing in a 12-mninute morning exercise program in the class roomns before classes start at 9 a.ml. The students and staff go througli a series of excercises including kicking, hand clap- ping, shoulder shrugging, body rotating, and skipping to the mnusic of popular tunes such as Popcorn, Leroy Brown and Love Will Keep Us Together, piped into each classroomn over the PA system. Principal Dwight Swerd- feger is very pleased wvith the resuits of the exercise pro- grami. He says it settles the children down to work quickly after it is over, and there is a minimal amount of noise when the children corne into the children. The programn serves a double purpose, for it pro- vides fitness for the body and alertness for the mmlid, he says. The program is the brain- child of physical education teacher Don Willerton, who picked it up from Larry Lalonde, vice principal of Fairgien School in Scarbor- ough. On Feb. 1 8, he included the. program in a workshop session at the Durham Region's Professiona 1 Develop- ment Day. It has caughit on with parents and teachers alike. One part-time teacher does the exercises when she is not at the school, and at least six recordings of the music have been taken home by parents who do the exercises with their children. There is a set of three exercise prograrns to clioose from, each a littie harder than the other. So far the students have been participat- ing in the first program, and will go to the second program after Easter, says Mr. Willerton. It takes about a week to Jearn the routines, he says. and the advanced and older students add their own varia- tions to the exercises, such as snapping their fingers in time to the music. Each morning's exercises consist of three- basic routines; a warm-up,' vigorous exercises, and slow-down exercises. Already a number of teachers, a physical education consultant andWhitby School Trustee David Sims, have visiýed E. A. Fairman School to see the program in action. So far there are 273 students and 14 staff partici- pating in the program and Mr. Willerton says other schools, and inrlividual classes are picking it Up. The children have given. the Drogrami the namne of "Health lustle", and enthusi- asm is running high. Alre ady thr.re are plans for a similar programn at Fairman School next January.
