To be more specifie, we can thank a Victorian gen- tleman who was too busy during the holiday season of 1843 -to send his custom- ary notes to friends, wish- ing themn the best of the season. So it was that Hen- ry Cole asked a friend to design a printed card that hie could send to friends in place of the usual hand- wvritten note. The friendl, artist John C. llorsley, illustrated a group of celebrants raising their glassés in a toast, flanked by illustrations of others feedinig the poor and clothing- the necdy. Thie message read, "A merry Christmas and a happy I new yeat to you. It wasn't long before tlie printe(I greeting cari ap- peareci i Aierica, design- ed byonue R. J. Greeting cards h&ive changed grcatly since that first card sent out by Henry Cole, and no doubt that good gentleman would be amazed at the diversity of designs sent through the mails'at Christînastime.'
