The number of candidates who have entered the variaus races. indicates ta us that many people do. indeed care about the way in which we are, or should be, governed. But, before you cast your ballots, we urge you ta read local newspapers, listen ta area radio stations and attend the election forums ta find out more about the candidates. Only by doing this will you be able to frnd out which ones are capable and which ones are not, which ones are owls and which ones are turkeys. Beieve us when we say that there are some of each and that it is important for you to make the distinction before you vote. t - '63v ~ 4CCOpQD/A/ T7-0/rE ZA7-ÀE57 POý1 fyOZIAV/ /CAA' BFAT YQ'R OLV/AI Theatre Company is grateful for ctizns sPr Dear Editor, Mainly, this letter is written ta openly thank John Livingstonle who expressed hîs appreciat ion for Whitby's Community Theatre, the Whitby Theatre Company and aur first production this season, "Night Must Fall", in the Nov. 3 Free Press. it seems tao few peaple these days afford the timie ta write constructive letters sucli as this, complimefitifig the efforts madle on behaîf of graups serving the cammunity. We are proud ta be arnang them, and grateful ta be acknowledged. Mr. Livingstone pointed out colnimliitY theatre gave bath lie and his wife a warmi feeling for the tawni and the performers. He also stated live theatre was superior ta inedicore television pragramis, which unfortunately is true in the opinion of mnany, wha are either forced ta watch these because they are confined ta Free market, not, free enterprise, lias failed Dear Sir: Bette Stephensaon, the 'rnistress' ofilabor, told the Canadiari Club "high levels of unemployment have raised fears and damaged aur sense of security" and then she goes on ta blame Canada's Prime Minister far everything from abivalence ta fueling inflation. Double-talk of the worst sort. But then she says (according ta her text): "In respanSe ta these two ecanamnic problems, aur federal leader declared the failure of the free enterprise system and proposed major, reconstructive surgery. Then followed a litany of abstruse vergiage, rephete with imper- spicuit'y and equivacatian". Haw's'that again, M'am? WelI, let's tahk English. Why shoulId Sterling Drug Company (one of the culprits singled out by the AIB) make much big profits at the expense of labour and the consumer? There mav be some who like ta sec al these drug campaflies make a killing at the expense of the ordinary ýcitizen. But 1 don't and 1 trust there are others with me. We can assure those wha have flot yet attended aur productions within -the last twa years, that we are equal ta manly theatre graups in Toronito, where people travel miles assumning it ta be more professional. Obviously, the Livingstafles have recognized what the members of WTC are giving, namely their time, dedicatian, and personal expenses. We are fortunate in having a courteous hospitable, front of house committee, excellent directors, performers second to none, and a backstage and lighting crew wha give as much of their time and talent as they would to a regular paying job. Much* rehearsal timne is squeezed in ta a few months té bring a production ta life and ahl this is clone simply because they love it. It is most important ta us we give aur best, and perform- ing for, the senior citizens free of cost, is a unique pleasure for us. 1 have spoken with several play, of aur variety show, and they are thrilled ta attend. We make them laugh, cry, and sometimes irritable at the vil lan in some instances. They sort of warm us up for the general public performances the following nights. Our aim is ta generate mare public interest by way of inviting new members ta jain us and, or becoming sub-' scribers ta aur plays. Naturally this aids the cost of produc- tions, without which we could nat fuftction. In closing, for citizens like the Livi ngstanes, it will always be a special pleasure ta perform, because they want us, and we need them.' Don't miss "The Ginger- bread Lady"' in Feb., aur variety show in spring, and aur clesing comedy "How the Other Hlf Loves" in May., Came back ta the dressing room after the show and say hello.
