AGE 10, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 1976, WHITBY FREE PRESS Tournament this weekend Puckrins look ready for Cinderella World Series The Whitby Novice girls tuned up for the upcom: ing Cinderella-World Series of Softball Tournament in Corning, New York, with three impressive wins last week. The Puckrins, who will leave for Corning at a.m. Friday, about 14 hours after their opening playoff game ends, won two exhibition games and one regular season game. In exhibition play, Whitby trounced Oshawa Fernhill Bantams 28-17 and smashed Bowman and Gibson Midgets 12-3. In Lakeshore League action, the Puckrins edged Ajax 6-4. Whitby defeated Oshawa despite committing 12 errors. Susan Bissell led the offence by belting four hits, scoring six runs and driving in seven runs. Pitcher Marion Verkuyl struck out eight batters, allowed eight hits and walked eight batters. In the contest against Bowman and Gibson, the Puckrins played errorless ball. Darlene Gallas and Laurie Kirkton led the Whitby offence with three hits apiece. Debbie leaslip, Çathy Allin and Susan Fraser shared the pitching duties for the winners. In the narrow victory over Ajax, Puckrins' hurler Marion Verkuyl fanned 18 batters, walked two and gave up four hits. Debbie Reinhardt was Whitby's top hitter with two. In the Cinderella Division, Munn's Press beat Matthew's Sunoco 19-11, Consumers Gas defeated Midway Datsun 14-4, Hooker Chev Olds trounced Henry Buildall 34-9, Stu Jenkins humiliated Gus Brown 48-8, Mary Brown's doubled Sheffield Pet Products 24-12, Consum- ers Gas downed Matthew's Sunoco 25-8, Sheffield Pet Products buried Henry Buildall 26-6 and Stu Jenkins topped Mary Brown's 16-11. Stu Jenkins and Mary Brown's are tied for first place with 16 points each. County Interdistrict Soccer Bantams lose to leading Peterborough Peterborough Riverside Nurseries virtually assured tlhemselves of the County Interdistrict Soccer League Bantam éhampionship when they defeated Whitby Ferrco Engineering 6-3 in a recent game in Peterborough. Joanne Mulcahy scored five goals to lead Gus Brown' Motors to a 6-0 verdict over Pickering in an intermediate game in Pickering. Kerry Grace added a single while Audrey Huinink got~ the shutout. In junior play, visiting Mitchell Brothers dropped a 6-1 decision to ýPickering. Theresa Dooley scored the losers' lone goal. The Kinettes of the senior division blanked West Rouge 5-0 on shutout goaltending by Debbie Vesters, two goals by Linda Brown and singles by Elizabeth Brown, Tania Bausey and Eleanor O'Neil. Several Whitby teans will compete in the remaining games in the County Town Carnival soccer tournament during the week and on the weekend. Tonight, Wexford and Chingacousy play a peewee game at 6 at Peel Park and Oshawa and Whitby a bantam contest at 7:30 at Peel Park. Wexford and Oshawa play a mosquito game at 6:30 at Cochrane St. Park. On Monday, the finals will be held at Peel Park starting with the mosquitoes at 9:30 a.m., the senior girls at 10:45 a.m., the peewees at 12:15 p.m. and the bantams at 2 p.m. The Whitby Minor Soccer Association executive takes on town council at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peel Park.
