Order 0fL St John 0f Jerusaleni Knights of Malta . ad 16 Knights Invested in this Historical, Chivalric and Noble Order. The Order was established in Jerusalemn in the year 1048 and in the years following -noved to Cyprus, Rhodes, Malta, Russia and later because of political unrest moved to the U.S.A. Activity in Canada started in the year 1640. The Frenchi Knights built St John House in 1647, to-day the famous hotel Chiateau Frontenac sits on its sights. However, rnost of the Knights returned to Europe due to climatic conditions. This' Order has many influencial persons as Members, Kings, Queens, Princes, and many nobleinen and women, also business men and people from ail walks of life. They all work together for the well being of mankind. Today they do not brandish swords or wear armour but wear the uniform of Charity. The Order is still Nobel and chivalry and its members are considered as Noblemen in most royal courts. In 1975, the Knights idi Canada under the Leadership of their Prior established a Priory. He is a resident of Brooklin, Capt. Noble J. Frendo Cumbo, C.D., (rtd). There are three members from Whitby, Kt. Kt. Cdr. F. Sillato, Chev. Paul Frendo Cumbo, and Chev. T. Urquhart. Some well known memrbers are: The Hon. Stanley Haidasz, M.P. Mr. N Leluk MPP P.C. The cereniony was held at St. Paul The Apostie Chuich in Toronto and reception at Villa Colombo, it was a Royal occasion, guests included mnany from Europe and the U.S. World figures that attended are, H.R.H. Actually, driver 'Wendy Appleton and her husband Brian were on crpure on a' littie iised road in Whitby's northern suburbia. Allan Kirby and Peter Spellen in a Fiat 124 coupe swept the 18 car field tosing only 30 points over the challenging 68 mile course to win First Overall and First Non-iaycee entry. Second overaîl was Sandy MacPherson and Jack McCorkell in a Jeep close bebînd with 36 points. Third overail, and first iaycee crew, was Brian and Edna Tatcheil of the Whitby club. The ral ly was followed by a Farnily Picnic and Children's Fun Day at Fantasyland Park. For further information, caîl David White at 723-2401. 72 Whitbyites attend Longueuiltwinning operation, Whitby's twinning program with Longueuil, Quebec is recognized as one of the most successful in Canada. Seventy-two Whitby resi- dents, the largest delegation ever from this town, left Guildwood station Friday afternoon, and spent a week- end in Longueuil enjoying Quebec hospitality and ex- cIianging good-will gifts with the citizens of this city of 100,000 on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River near Montreal. Despite the train from Guildwood being two hours late in leaving, anid the arrivai being dampened by pouring rain, the festivities got under way successfully Friday nlight with ani exchiange of civic gifts at the Longùeuil City Hall. Couincillor Gilles Leduc, represe uting Longueil's Mayor Marcel 'Iýobidas, who was in acted as host along with Longueuil's Chief of Protocol, Gaston Dunn. Councillor Leduc and Whitby's Mayor Jim Gartshore read the, principles of twin- ning, and gifts were exchanged between the town counilors fromi each community. Whitby's official gift to Longueuil on this occasion was a podium, inscribed with the names of the town counicillors, and Longueuil presented Whitby with works of art by local craftsmen. Mayor Gartshore com- mented that it was rather appropriate that the twinning took place during Canada Week, and said lie hoped' it wo uldhlelp to bring the Frenchi and Englishl cultures of Canada together. Benny La Haye, whose canoe trip. of Whitby Ven- turers to Montreal during Expo '67, started the twýin- ning, presented some roses to Longueuil, expressing the hope that "our friendship will flower like these roses". Following the official ceremnonies, which had to be speeded up because of the lateness of the hour,, the Whitby delegation proceeded to a dinner and dance at a local restaurant.
