The Whitby - Dunedins midgets found Bowmanville's Soper Park a bit more to their liking, and behind. a onehit pitching chore by left-hander Cam Murkar, they came out on top 7-2 to bring their season mark to three wins and two defeats. Murkar, making his second start of the young season, picked up his second victory against no losses, holding the Bowmanville A's to a lone hit through seven innings. He struck out thirteen batters and was in command all the way. In the eighth with a 6-1 lead he came out of the game and John Heaslip came iii to finish. The A's managed a single run off the Whitby southpaw and loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth to threaten, but the Dunedins held on, to end the inning and take the game 7-2, having scored a single run in the top of the ninth. Mark Tutton led the club at the plate with a double and a single, John Heffer had a double, while Jody Turner, Mike Sorichetti, Tim Twin- ing, Doug Shearer, Cam Murkar and Mark MacDonald added singles. Highlights of the game, along with the strong pitching chore by Murkar, were a perfect bunt by Jody Turner which really got things moving for the Dunedins in their four-run fourth inning, and a fine stop by John Heffer at third for the final out, which could have caused trouble had the sharply hit balWgone down the1ine. After winning their tirst two garnes of the season against Oshawa and Lindsay in fairly convincing fashion. The Dunedins east trip turned- out to be a lost weekend. The two-game set was arranged as a split two bill with a game in Belleville at 1 p.m. and a later game at 5 p.m. in Thurlow, an arrangement to cut down on travel. The Belleville contest was a scoreless affair for five inn- ings with Whitby finally cracking the goose eggs on the board with a lone run in the top of the sixth. They went ahead 2-0 with another tally in the top of the seventh, but Belleville answer- ed with three runs to go out in front 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, adding another in the bottom of the eighth for a 4-2 lead. The Dunedins rallied for a lone run but their comeback was cut short and the game ended 4-3. in every department the Belleville squad had just a slight edge, outhitting Whitby 9-8. The Dunedins had three miscues to two for Belleville and the outcome was the close 4-3 finish. With just a bit of a break the game could have gone the other way. Losing pitcher Dave McWhirter gave up nine hits, only one of them an extra- base blow, a double and he had six strikeouts. 12 of the Dunedins went down via the strikeout route. John Parrott and John Heffer matched each other at the plate, both coming through with a triple and a single, Jody Turner had a pair of singles and Doug Shearer and Paul Clugston, singles, to com- plete the Dudedits Offenceé beat Bowmanville In the nightcap played up in Thurlow, there was plenty of scoring but the Dunedins again came out on the short of a one-run ballgame, losing 10-9. Whitby opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first, but two in the bottom of the first and three in the last of the second gave Thurlow a 5-3 lead. In the third the Dunedins squared things up, 5-5, but the tie was short lived as Thurlow scored a single run to make it 6-5, in the bottom of the third. There was no more scoring until the eighth and it looked as if the Dunedins might pull off a victory when they went out in front 7-6. In the bottom of the ninth Thurlow tied it up 7-7 to force extra innings. In the top of the tenth the Dunedins picked up a pair of runs to take a 9-7 lead but in the bottom of the tenth Thurlow battled back to score three runs and win the game 10-9. Whitby hitters were Doug Shearer, Mark MacDonald and Mike Sorichetti each with a double and single, and John Parrott, Kevin Whitfield and Paul Clugston each with singlet., Whitby used three pitchers, John Heaslip started but the young southpaw was having control trouble and Mark MacDonald came out in the second to throw ::ffective relief until the tenth when Dave McWhirter came in with one out, the score tied and the bases loaded which is a tough spot to enter a game. Whitby left 15 men stranded in the game and une timely hit mnight have spelled the difference between the loss and victory. The Dunedins are scheduled to meet Bowmanville tonight, Wednesday June 9th, at E. A. Fairman Park. Whitby's bantam entry in the E.O.B.A. got off on the right track when they edged Port Hope 4-3 in their season opener, winning the game in story book fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning. Port Hope opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second, Whitby answered with a single in the bottom of the third and went in front 3-2 with a pair in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth Port Hope squared things up at 3-3 but Whitby avoided extra innings with the winning run in their half of the sevinth and final inning. Larry Chize: got the nod as the starter a the opener and he responded with a five-hit, 10-strikeout perfor- mance, yielding only four walks . whuch is excellent control for this early in the season. He alsd shared hitting honours with Kevin McLelland, each with a pair of singles, while Gary Shearer added a double and Rick Dunphy and Murray McCorkell had a single each. Paul Heffer provided the defensive highlights for Whitby making two key plays. The Legionaires next game is tomorrow, Thursday June 1Oth at Peel Park at 6:30 p.m. The K of C tykes are having a hard time getting into action, having played only one game thus far. The withdrawal of Ajax has left a gap in their schedule but they play in Bowmanville tomor- row night and host Belleville this Sunday afternoon getting underway at 2 p.m. The Whitby club had several miscues but with the lateness of the season and the lack of good practice weather it's to be expected they will be a little rusty. The Legionaires .dropped a pair of games to Peter- borough, losing to the Petes Majors in the liftlock city 9-4 and 10-8 to the Petes Minors at Peel Park. In the opener of the set played in Peterborough, the Legionaires used Russ Jubenville and Jeff Westen- hoefer on the mound, both first-year men at the E.O.B.A. level and they came through with good showings even though losing. Bill Shields, Mark Kennedy, Robbie Dyment and Russ Jubenville, each with a single, were the Whitby hitters. The action shifted to Whitby for the second gaine of the Pee-Wee set with the Peterborough Minors supplying the opposition and the Legionaires came out on the short end.of a 10-8 score. The gaine was decided on errors and the Legionaires might have pulled off a win had they not given away as many runs through inexperience. Russ Jubenville started on the mound for Wlitby and Dave Goreski and Mike Laurie pitched in relief. Brian Jimmo and Mike Hlanley shared hitting honours each with a double and two singles, Real Bergevin, Mark Kennedy and Mike Laurie each had a pair of doubles, while Robbie Dyment and Dave Goreski added singles.
