PAGE 16, WEDNESDAY, MAY 19,11976, WHITBY FREE PRESS Sea Cadets in, top form for annuai inspection Whitby Sea Cadet Corps turned out in its best style Wednesday at King- Street School for its annual inspection by Mayor Jim Gartshore. Mayor Gartshore added a little class to the occasion by arriving in a 1938 Rolîs Royce, and was received by off icers of the corps. Following his inspection of the corps, Mayor Gartshore took the salute as the corps marched past the reviewing stand, and made a short speech to the cadets. Speeches were also made by the' Navy League repre- sentative from Toronto, Jîm Qaultrough, and the corn- manding officer of the Corps Capt. Jim Vanderende. Following displays of drill and other sI.ills the cadets learned during the past year, and selections played by the Oshawa Sea Cadet Band, awards were presented to the Whitby cadets. The best new recruit of the past vear was. Richard, Mitchell; best cadet of the year, Kenneth Palmer; and best coswain of the year, Chief Petty Officer Dave Broome. Sailing scholarships were presented to Cadets Derek Keenan and Juanita Bradley to provide them with training at the Whitby Sailing School. The sailing school presented one of the scholarships, valued at $105. There was to be a contest for the best division but the two cadet divisions tied, and the award was set over for next year: The Whitby Sea Cadet Corps was founded in 1971 by a group of citizens înterested in youth work. t is supported and sponsored by the Navy League, Whitby Branch, and the Town of Whitby which provide accom- modations and necessary funds for the day-to-day operations of the corps. "It is our hope that you wil be proud of this programn and of the role the sea cadets play in promoting citizenship, leadership and discipline in our young people", said Capt. Vanderet'de irn his address. "It is our desire that this program wfil, lead to better Canadians and hence a better Canada".
