Have you èver noticed how much of our life we're forced to live by double standards. You can brag about how wild you were as a kid but if your kids turn out that way you'll murder them. It's alright for a girl to take ballet but if a guy takes it he's a fruitcake. Husbands can hang around singles bars and pick up girls but housewives belong at home in the kitchen. I've learned to live with a lot of these irregularities but there is one that has quite recently corne to the forefront and to which I strongly object. It's the one about how it's not nice to fool Mother Nature but Mother Nature can fool us but I swear she took an LSD trip on a recent April 25th day. Easter weekend Mother Nature gave us her best. It was sunny, the temperature in the low 80's and everybody was enjoying an early summer. The crocuses were all in bloom. The birds were flying here and there gathering pieces of straw and twigs to build their nests and a lot of people were walking around topless and in shorts. That's another double standard - men can go topless but women can't. I was everi amazed to notice on that lovely Easter weekend that there were dozens of bees flitting from bloom to bloom doing their work generally described in children's books under "the birds and the bees". Of course like a fool I too fell under the charms of Ma Nature and dragged out all my patio furniture including the hammock. I dug the flowerbeds and even planted some potatoes out back. In short, if you'll pardon another bad pun, Mother Nature led me down the garden path. Scarely a week later she threw her below-the belt punch. When it turned cold last Saturday I wasn't too suspicious, after all it was still early in the season. I decided to do some inside housework but when I dragged my carcuse out of bed Sunday morning and saw the air filled with little white pieces of fluff I began to think the previous evening had been worse than I suspected. D.W.McGUAY W I was just about to swear off carrying on Saturday nights when I noticed the lawns and trees and cars and in fact half of Whitby was white. The radio announcer confirmed my worst suspicions. I was staggered. Sure it's not unusual to have snow in April but the previous weekend it hit 83 degrees! I was immediately hit with a mental scene of an* Englishman standing in the middle of a snow covered garden, a cup of tea in his hand and a big gob of snow in the cup. He turns to his gardener who is still standing there in shocked disbelief atall the snow and the Englishman says, "Only in Canada!"' Of course the gardener picks up a wilted, snow covered tulip and answers, "Pity!" Come on Mother Nature, I call that a foul blow. And speaking of fowl, last weekend I spotted a poor goose, trying to maintain height despite his wings icing up and being blinded with snow and the poor thing was literally flying in circles. I'm not sure if he was trying to decide whether to head south again or go further north and hope he acclimiatized himself to our lovely norther Spring. The poor robins and sparrows that were busy only a week before making nests were forced to use those very nests as shelters frojm the storm. Of course those that were halfway finished their nests saw them ska!-en to pieces by the storm and wound up seeking shelter as best they could. I don't know where the bees went but it wouldn't surprise me if they chose my attic. That's ail I need is another summer WHITBY C3OMMUNITY BINGO Every Monday Night 7:15 p.m. first Early Bird game BUS SERVICE AVAILABLE Heydenshore Pavilion JAYCEES KINSMEN KIWANIS OPTIMISTS qHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 1976, PAGE 5 with the bedroom condemned because of bees! And the most unfair cut of ail Mother Nature is that the North country up around Georgian Bay and even Orillia didn't get hardly a flake of snow while we here in Southern Ontario we're literally caught with our snow plows stored for the summer. I spent most of Sunday covering up my flowerbeds in preparationfor the frost and loudly cursing a very fickle Mother Nature. I suspect some of this is her punishment because I threatened to pave over my lawns with green cernent.. I think l'Il saunter over to the news stand and pick up a Florida paper. You never know, there might be a job iisted in the want ads for an aspiring young reporter willing to work in the hot sunshine where they have little rain and no snow. Could I be so lucky..........?
