The OPP describes the Auxiliary Police as an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in the Ontario Provincial Police as a career. It gives a person a chance to be part of the force, get firsthand experience about being a police officer, and gives the force a chance to evaluate the prospective recruit prior to his joining the regular force. Auxiliary constables are reqiired to put in a certain amount of time each month which includes two evening training sessions held on the first and third Tuesday of each month. At these training meetings, they receive training and lectures identical to those given to the regutlar force. They also receive self-defence, first aid and firearms training. An auxiliary constable receives a uniform very similar to the regular con- stables and must accompany a regular force officer on cruiser patrol for a minimum of eight hours each month. During the summer months, the Auxiliary unit assists by supplying crew members for two patrol skiffs doing marine enforcement duties on Lakes Scugog and Ontario.
