Approxirnatcly 1 OOpeoplc- representatives of' schools, spokespcople for comrnunity groups, and of bourse, con- cerned parents - attended the meeting presided'over by pro- gram co-chairpeople Sharion Thornpson and Susan Muir. The programn consists of-a number of homes in each block displaying a Block Parent sign, an indication that protection and responsible rassistance in an emergency is available. Block Parents display the signis at their discretion, preferably at "peak hours" when children are'1 going to and coming from school. Children go to these homes when alarmed by strangers, threatened by ruffians, fright- e- ed by vicious dogs, involved in accidents or bothered by illness. The Block Parent, will then cal] the child's parents and/or the police, depending on the severity of the situation, and comfort the child during his or her stay. A Block Parent iî flot expectcd to break up street fights, render first-aid, give food and beverage or provide toilet facilities. -"The success or failure depends not on the police force", Detective Joli-,.Kay of the Durhamn Region Police told those in attendance. "it depi-nds entirely on the citizens" Mr. Kay said that, after consulting police in areas where the prograrn is operating, lie feels "Without question the programn prevents child related offences". Colleen Robb, a Block Parent in Hamilton for three years, said "If one kid's been saved, it's svorth it".
