by JACKIE ROTH In 10 years, the Whitby District Family YMCA lias had an ·increase of 61,643 participants in organized programs. Y executive director Ron Hupfield, in his annual report, said that members and non-mernbers on record in 1975 totalled 4,312, an increase of 324 over 1974. He also reported that more women and girls are involved with Y programs than•-men and boys. In 1975, 2,634 females were involved com- pared to 1,678 males. Mr. Hupfield reported that a policy established three years ago which allows non- members to participate in Y programs has been "very acceptable". He said that the Y has adapted to changing needs and growth in the commun- ity and has retainedautonomy in all aspects. Mr. Hupfield commended the Central. Lake Ontario Conservative Authority for cooperating with the Y in providing summer day camp for nearly 1,000 children and leaders. He said there has been a major growth in special pre-school programs, which are now licensed under the Day Nurseries Act by the Ontario Ministry of Com- munity and Social Services. A resolution by the executive of the local branch that it change its name to the Durham Region YMCA was adopted at the 10th annual meeting last week. President Bob Attersley, in his annual report, said that, since its inception, the Whitby Y has had many people from outside the town participate in its program. In explaining the name change, he said "at the time of our incorporation in 1966, the name 'Whitby District Family YMCA' seemed satisfactory but, with the inception of regional govern- ment and the formation of Durham Region, which basically replaced On:;rio County, it seems advisable that we keep up with the regional changes and adopt the :name". The executive includes: Robert Attersley, president; Randy Kline, vice-president; Betty Holman, secretary; Durham Board of Education. Mr. Hupfield said that, historically, the Y has played a major part in providing leadership in physical activity "In the realm of fitness the Y lias continued an active part which is in keeping witl the present-day concern about our total Canadian fitness". Mr. Hupfield nentioned several programs which were successful in 1975. Along with the pre-school prograns, activities for children in- cluded play camp, kindergym and Let's Create Together, a program designed to help mothers better understand their children. "The Y is very proud of all these programs which are nuch appreciated by the parents and children", Mr. Hupfield reported. New programs included baton twirling and rythmic gymnastics which both show great potential. Mr. Hupfield said the gymnastics club has continued to grow, and the Olympics has created increas- ing enthusiasm in this area. Some other popular pro- grams in 1975 included Ladies Take A 3reak, judo, badmin- ton, handball, swim instruc- tion, crafts, guitar, child care training, basketball, tennis, auto mechanics and the 4-H Club. Block Parent meeting to be. held Thursday A Block Parent Prograni, an organization of concerned residents which assists children in trouble, may soon be formed in Whitby. The program began in London, Ontario, when residents became concerned about increasing numbers of assaults on women and children.
