Mailing Permit No. 2941 Phone 668-6111: Toronto Lino 282-1004 VOT E Whitby is to have an election December 1. This is flot a regular election, but due to unforseen circunstances and a divided council, we are going to have one now as well as next year. So let's make sure we elect someone capable of dealing with the coniplexities of the Region as well as the problems of the town. Whoever wins the Mayoralty will have a year to prove themselves and they aie certaim, to give us a concentrated effort. Since the Region took over, the position of Mayor has become far n3ore diversi ed and a vide knowledge of many --different aspects of govern- ment is flot only desireabie but necessary. Because the RegLmn controls a large percent of our essential services it is of utmost importance that Whitby have a competent, concerned, capable person in the position of M'yor to press for the best possible deal for the residents of the Town of Whitby. If you are concerned about your town, your area, and yourself, giveUthe candidateNof your choice your support. THEY CARE ENOUGH TO RUN..YOIJ SHOULD CARE ENOUGH TO VOTE..... Bob Lindsay 21 Dymond Dr., Whitby, Ontario. Now appearing at a forum near youa THE SUPER SIX with their hit single 'PROMISES, PROMISES Dear Sir; DearThe Ratepaers of West Lnde: My sincere thanks to the West Lynde Com- munity Association for arranging the first of the series of all-candidates for Mayor meetings. I was disappointed however to see less than 50 of you attending. It was also disappoint- ing that the important issues so relevant to your area and to our Town were not fully discussed. In this respect and therefore, I am giving you my answers as I see them- to your questions out- lined in "Words From Dear Sirs, On behalf of Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Association I wish to convey the sincere thanks of all our mem- bers for the co-operation of the Whitby Free Press in publishing our game results and Associ- ation news duringsthe past sunmer. West Lynde" in The Whitby Free Press Novem- ber 12th issue. What does the candidate feel about deveopmeft? Moderatedevelopment is good for any communi- ty provided the relation- ship between residential and industrial develop- ment is kept. Residential On this, the 1Oth Anniversary of G.R.M.- L.A., we wish to thank, also, our sponsors and alI those who have helped in so many ways over the past years. The familiar black and red team colours have been seen and heard from, from Baie Comeau, Quebec, on the East to Vancouver, questions development only wi.. mean increased tax bur- den on us ail. Our country has an increas- ing housing shortage; I believe we all across the nation have the right to expect adequatehousing. Whitby .ust therefore do its fair share but let us not over extend our wel- supporters of subdivision thanked Dear Mike:1 I wonder if you would1 afford me the opportuni-i ty, via your "Letters to the Editor" column, to publicly thank the friends and 'cighbours who gave up their Monday evening to go to the Council meeting on November 10th in support of our efforts to have the "Oc- tober" plan for subdivi-' sion for the Langmaid property approved. Their attendance served to emphasize the concern for sane development expressed on their behalf by the Corridor Area Ratepayers' Association. Who said apathy was rampant!! You will recall that this plan (Plan "B", as we called it), incorporates a mixture of single-family, semi-detached, cluster housing, and apartment units that will provide a harmoniouse blending with the existilg area. Adoptioni of tItis plan will prevent the extremely high concentration of multiple-family develop- ment advocated by the Planning and Develop- ment Staff and one Town., Council member. And while we're hand- ing out kudos, let's not forget Gerry Emm, Joy Thompson and Don Love- lock, who voted in our favour, and particularlv Ji-GaLsor-wML i Jim Gartshore whio, in his capacity as Chairman of the Planning and Administrative. Com- mittee, ordered that "Plan B" be brought to the public's attention. It is reassuring to know that there are still some· public officials who listen to the people, even though it's necessary, at times, to go outside ones ownwad to find an officiai willing to ACT on public input from tat ward! Our progress to date is a shared success. Lets show our thanks and our hope for continued res- ponsive governmet on election day!t - Yours truly,- Cathiy Jubenville. RMLA uppori B.C.; on the West. We look forward to another successful year in 1976 and your assis- tance once again in the coring year. Yours very truly, Mrs. Greta M. Hope, Publicity Chairman, Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Association. on major issues come beyond our own means to carry the bur- den of taxes. Added residential development therefore must be tied into the increased indus- trial and commercial development. What does eacli candi- feel about the provision of municipal servies? Ratepayers pay for the municipal services. You only get what you pay for. I amn in favour of introducing a trans- portation system even if it would have to be sub- sidized. I know, how- ever, it will pay off, if' not directly then at least indirectly. For instance, by making our sports facilities available to more people and de- creasing the deficit pre- sently carried by' the Town on these facilities. Transportation most de- finitely will stimulate lo- cal shopping and is a nust for our senior citizens. We do need efficient and feasible planning, but, not elaborate, unrealistic planning. In this respect I am prepared to have the planning department justify its very existence in. i us present form. What does the candidate feel about future growth for Whitby? Is he favour- ably disposed to the plan- ners' dream of 100,000 people in Whitby? My comment to thh questiin is short ndo1 hope ,will clearly demon- strate My feelings. "UTTER NONSENSE". What does the candidate feel about the role of Mayor at the regional evel? I have no political am- bition to use Whitby as a bouncing board to a high- er, more lucrative future. I will stand and work for and on behalf of Whitby and the Whitby taxpayer only. I pledge to work to assure Whitbytits place in Region and to see that we get our tair share. I pledge to bring to your attention if the opposite would occur and with your help I am sure we will achieve our goals and fair share. How does the candidate view the bureaucracv? We have freedom of speech, freedom of choice but most of all freedom of movement. You and I enjoy it. We cannot deny this to any publie ser- vant. However a publie servant must be able to function within the de- cision of his employers namely· the ratepayers and their elected repre- sentatives. If any public servant cannot function within these conditions or finds. them objection- able to his beliefs he should remove himself or alternatively be removed from his position.
