Anyone interested in news items from back issues of the Whitby Frec Press can find what they are looking for at the Whitby Public Library. Last Friday the library re- ceived a set of microfilm of all the back issues of the Free Press fron June 1971 when the paper started, to Sept. 1975. In addition to the files of the Free Press the library received film of complete sets of the Brooklin Bulletin from April 1959 to December 1960, the Whitby Argosy from May 1970 to April 1971, the Whitby World from May 1970 to October 1971, and the Whitby Review from August 1972 to October 1972. The files of issues of the various Whitby weekly papers published since 1970 were collected by Brian Winter, archivist of the Whitby Historical Society, and sub- mitted to a Toronto micro- filming company recently for copying. The copies on film were presented to the library to bring up to date its microfilm files of Whitby newspapers fron 1850 to 1940. The files of the Brooklin Bulletin were loaned to Mr. Winter for copying, by Gord Wick, whose brother Don pub- lished the paper, and Free Press columnist Jim Quail (Bird's Eye View) supplied one issue of the Free Press which Mr. ~Winter did not have in his collection. Mike Burgess, publisher and managing editor of the Whitby Frce Press was on hand to wit. ness the presentation of the microfilm to Librarian Mrs. Anne Hope-Brown. The newspapers cover the major events of the past five years, in Whitby, including regional government, the opening of the Dr. J. O. Ruddy Hospital, the County Town Carilival, the establish- ment of the Whitby Arts Station, the building of the new club house at the yacht club, the building of Iroquois Park, the Whitby-Longueuil twinning, the development of West Lynde, the new town hall, and the growth of the industrial park. FREE PRESS ON MICROFILM Mike Burgess, publisher and managing editor of the Whitby Free Press looks on as Brian Winter, archivist of the Whitby Historical Society presents Mrs. Anne Hope Brown with microfilm of the Free Press for the town library. Mr. Winter arranged for the filming of all the Whitby weekly newspapers published from 1970 to 1975 as well as the Brooklin Bulletin, published 15 years ago. The film is available for use on the microfilm machine at the library, and was paid for by the library board. Free Press Photo Six umemployed Whitby residents will be assisting the recreation department with its work this winter through a Local Initiatives Program Grant. The recreation department recently received a grant ot $22,300 to sustain these people for 25 weeks, and they' have been divided up to har.- le various projects, said Recreation Director Wayne DeVeau. One person is being hired as a maintenance assistant for the [oquois Park arena and swimming pool. An extra man is required says Mr. DeVeau, but there was no money in the budget to in- clude him this year. Two painters have also been hired to paint ail the community centres. They will also be painting all parks equipment and picnic tables to facilitate an early start for good grooming of the parks in 1976, says Mr. DeVeau. Another person will be working at the new senior citizens centre, obtaining addi- tional information for grant applications, looking into programs to be initiated by seniors for seniors, and man- aging the centre until a full-- time director can be hired. A secretary will be hired for the recreation department office to assist in sorting old files and gathering new re- source material to build up a library of recreation infor- imation. She will also be doing regular secretarial work. The recreation department is also planning to hire a leadersh ip training person to look into the leadership needs in the town and to work with citizen groups to set up leadership programs in such things as parliamentary proce- dure, conduct of meetings, group dynamics, better me- thods of teaching skills, and all those other characteristics inherent in a good leader. The sport and recreation personnel of Durham College are interested in working with this program, says Mr. DeVeau, and any people inter- ested in applying for this position, or organizations in- terested in taking the courses: should apply to the recreation department. New Brooklin arena tractor to eliminate annoying odor Patrons of the Brooklin arena will be relieved of an annoying problem within the next week when a new tractor arrives to pull the ice cleaning equipment. -'Many complaints have been expressed by residents regarding the very poignant odor froni the present diesel tractor", said Recreation Director Wayne DeVeau. "Other arenas of die same size and roof height such as Markham and Sunderland are using a gasoline tractor with very good success", he said. Mr. DeVeau expects a gasoline tractor, authorized recently by the town council will be in use within the next week. "This may not completely solve the problem, so an ex- haust fan is being proposed by the recreation department for consideration by council in the 1976 recreation budget", he said. I PLEDGE THE REAL ISSUE GORDON HANNA The role of government in a free society has to be the prime concern of all citizens today as we sec government becoming more remote and less understood to a degree of almost total mistrust. Here in the Durham Region we have witnessed the greatest transfer of authority froni the Local to the Regional Council of any area in Ontario. The effect has been for more expensive administration and a lesser effective service. A noteworthy example of a reduction in service here in Whitby has to be Police Protection. We in the Town of Whitby because ofihe Amalgamation in 1968 have encountered many difficulties that are as yet just being felt in other consolidated municipalities. The matter of identity is a major concern to ail people today and of even greater concern to those of us in the Old Town of Whitby and the Village of Brooklin. The building of a new Town Hall on Rossland Road is a deliberate attempt to create a New Town and a new indentity for the Town of Whitby. Unfortunately the creation of a new identity means the phasing out of the historic identities of Whitby and Brooklin an ingredient that neither area support with their hearts. The major investment currently underway to accomplish this end will have the result only of destroying the spirit of the separate areas and will not create an identity without that spirit and will end with no identity at all. My analysis of the financial capability of this Town today reveals to me an inability to undertake such a project especially so when the purpose will not be accomplished. Therefore upon election as Mayor it will be my goal to stop the project completely or hopefully be capable of transferring the land and the barely started building to the Region of Durham for consolidation of their departments. A Region of numerous separate identities is a must to me and the maintaining of separate identities in this Town is the starting point with Whitby and Brooklin the prime targets and the stimulation of Myrtle and Ashburn with moderate growth to follow. Now is the time for this philosophic change in the Town of Whitby and the Durham Region to be initiated whf-e we still have that opportunity. . To provide leadership and respectful consideration of all matters involving the duties of the Mayor To bridge the gap between People and Govern- ment with genuine understanding . To secure the future and identity of the down- town area of Whitby with public involvement . To perpetuate the identity of Brooklin with the involvement of its citizens as to the selection of that future . To FINANCIALLY ANALYSE the operation of the Town of Whitby with an understandable report to the public prior to the 1976 election . To delegate authority to individual councillors for dealing with and solving minor problems . To support and strengthen community organi- zations . To actively assist in the retention of Historic buildings . To provide guidance and assistance or expanding recreation . To DO MY BEST AT ALL TIMES in establishing FOR MAYOR * 6 years school board * 2 years Twp. of Whitby Councillor * 1 year Deputy Reeve * 2 years Reeve - Town of Whitby * Vice President Chamber of Commerce * President Whitby Minor Baseball * Member Downtown Action Committee * Director County Town Carnival LIP grant employs six people for recreation department work - A
