Your total com- mitment to the recovery of ail possible resources from urban solid waste is an exam- pIe to be applauded through- out Canada and the world." The Resource Recovery Program, initiated by Bill Newman, wil lead to the establishmnent of Recovery plants across Ontario which will feature the recovery of preçious resources for re-use. Plans are fully underway for six of these centres to be built in the near future. The need for landfill sites will be reduced by 90 percent when ail these centres are operational. Only sparsely populated areas wlll still require landfill sites for waste disposai. The Federated Wom1en's Institute of Ontario have also sent a letter acknowledging the work of BUll Newman in this regard, which stated ". The Federated Women's Institute of Ontario..on be- haif of their 3 1,000 mnembers ...congratulate you on your current programn to consider the recycling of solid waste". Bill Newman is, quite naturally, proud of the ac- complishments of the Mini- stry. "Our commitment to an improved environment is reflected in the Resource Recovery Program; through our Watt's from Waste Pro- gram (turning steamn from gar- bage into energy); through our Great Lakes clean-up program which is right on, schedule; and in our recrea- tion lakes dlean-up programs. We are a very active Ministry and we are working hard toward our goal of providing Ontarians with a safe, dlean environment both for them- selves and fo 'r future genera., ion s. T 'hese programrs are ahl on-track despite a 4 percent reduction in the Civil Service Complement of the Ministry:' The accomplishments of Bill Newman and the Mini- stry of the Environmient have- even caught the eye of Jack Riddell, the'Ontario Liberal Environmental critic, who said during the debate on the Estimates of the Ministry, "I think the Ontario Ministry has donc a relatively good job in trying to control some of the pollution problemns. 1 might say 1- was talking to Madame Sauve a while back and she intimnated that the Ontario Government is ove government which is making somne headway." The Ministry is also active in providing water and sewer services to municipalities. At this imne, there are about 500 projeets in the planning or developmnent stage in Ont- arlo worth an estimated $881 million dollars, including those in Beaverton, Canning- ton and Sunderland. Munici- palities can receive up to a 75 percent subsidy.for these services frorn the province. Your Funnybone He who laughs often. laughs best.
