MIDLAND - Grade seven students from Whitby Senior Public School stepped back into history rccently when they "lived-in" at Sainte- Marie among the Hurons, a reconstructJon of a l7th- I çg~F w century French Jesuit mission. 'Mhe 21 chiidren, super- vised by teacher Ian Cooke and a parent, Mrs. Marion lrwin, were chosen from al the Grade seven classes. according to their enthusiasm for history. "Living-mn" at Sainte- Marie involves simulating l7th-century life by prepar- ing meals in the cookhousc fireplace and the hot-coal oven and sleeping on wooden cots in buildings hcated only by fireplaces. The prograni runs through February and March and is open to al Ontario sehools. Whitby stu- dents spent three days and two nigits. Marefi 3 to 5, on the site. Cooke said the result 'was the students were ready for the cold and smoke and the lack of 2th-century conven- jences such as modemn range stoves and thermostats. "'They (tie students) loved it. Some of them were very cold the rirst night, but after they adjusted to the climate, they reaily enjoyed themnselves," fie said..
