Fire Dept. Honoured The Whitby Fire Depart- ment was recently honoured for its fine work in the area of fire protection. The Whitby department was named first in its class (population between 25,000 to 100,000) in Ontario, se- cond in its class in Canada and third overall in Canada. Last year, the department was in the 10,000 to 25,000 population category. Much of the credit for the awards goes to Platoon Chief Ken Corner who compiles a scrapbook of the depart- ments work and submits it to the National Fire Protection Association in Boston which oversees fire departments throughout Canada and the United States. Ashburn Residents Want Park Council's Operations Com- mittee is studying a request from S. Hollingsworth, secre- tary of the Ashburn Community Centre, to meet with council to discuss the possibility of acquiring a park for the area. Ceramic Lessons Anyone with a little spare time on their hands and creativity in their blood should be interested in Joyce May's Ceramic House of Joy. Mrs. May will give lessons in the art and the students will have an opportunity to make such items as lamps, vases, figurines and porcelain dolls. Liberals Winter I Crnival Norm Cafik, M.P. and Des Newman, Liberal Candi- date for Ontario South, will be special guests,at the Liber- ai Association of the Federal Riding of Ontario Winter Carnival to be held Mardh 2. The carnival, featuring skidooing, skating and tobag- ganing, will be held at the Hamer Farm on Hamer Road, one mile south of Myrtle off Highway 12. Admission is $1 for adults and children free. The Liberal Association is also planning a special lunch- eon to be held March 8, International Womens Day, at which Norm Cafik will be a special guest. The purpose of the luncheon is te organize a women's seminar to com- memorate International Women's Day. A new Liberal Association with Barold Philips, president, has been formed in the north of the riding. It is known as the Liberal Association of Georgina Township.
