WHITBY FREE PRESS, WCWNESDAY, JANUARY 22,,19750 PAGE 3 CanadianSmokérs Relatively U nchanged OTTAWA - Smoking ha- bits of Canadians have re- mained relatively unchanged from 1972 ta 1973, accord- ing, ta statistics released recently by National Health and Welfare Minister Marc Lalonde. The latcst figures show that non-smakers out- num'ber smokers in Canada: 53 per cent af the populati 'on 15 years of age and cver does not smoke at ail, and 60 per cent of the population over 15 does flot smoke cigarettes regularly - thiat is, every day. A slightly greater percent- age of Canadians women over the age of 1 5 were smokers in 1973 (36.3 per cent) than in 1972 (35.7 per cent), con- tinuing a trend evident since 1965, especially in the age group 15 ta, 19 years.' In 1965, 77.8 per cent of Cana- dian girls in this age group were non-smokers, compared ta 67 per cent in 1972 and 65.9 per cent in 1973. 0 f Candiîan men over the REPORTr- WARN ING TO SNOWVECL OWNERS: A. number of occurrences relating ta snow vehicles were reported ta the Whitby Dctachment last week. On Wednes- day, in twa separate incidents snow vehicles went thraugh the ice of Lake Scugog. On the weekend two other vehicles broke through at the shoreline and becamne stuck in about two feet of water. Local fliers have reported sceing very dangerous ice patches when flying over Lake Scugog. Snow vehicle operators are urged to wait untl the present cold spell has lime ta thicken the ice an the lake. Over the weekend two more snow vehicles were stolen from the Port- Perry area. This brings the total number of vehicles reported stolen in 1975 to appraximately 20. Al these thefts occurred in the Port Perry area. Snow vehicle awners should invest in some sort of device ta make their snow vehicle difficuit ta steal. The Serial number of your machine should be taken down and kept in a safe place so that in the event of the theft of your machine, Police can issue a stolen vehicle bulletin with a description of your machine on it. Lets face it, unless yau can supply the licence and serial number, most machines look the same to an officer an patrol. Ige of 15, 42.2 per cent were non-smokers in 1973, com- pared to 42.6 per *cent in 1972 and 34.8 per cent in 1965. The 57.8 per cent of the smoking maie population in 1973 was dividcd as fol- lows: 47.8 per cent regular cigarette smokers, compared to 47.4 per cent in 1972 and 54.6 per cent in 1965, 3.8 per cent occasional cigarette smokers, compared ta 3.5 per cent in 1972 and 3.3 per cent in 1965; 6.2 per cent smoked only pipe and/or cigars, com- pared to 6.5 per cent in 1972 and 7.3 per cent in 1965. From 1965 to 1972, the rising percentages of women smokers were outweighed by lower rates for men, ta pro- duce lower over-ali figures each successive year. The 1973 statistics show a hait ta this trend. While the levels of smoking are close ta 1972 levels, the over-ail downward- trend hias levelled, off with marginal increases in many categories. Statistics, prepared for the Non-Medîcal Use of Drugs Directorate hy Statistics Canada, indicate that those who do smoke, however, ap- pear ta be smoking more cigarettes per day. There hias been a risc in the percentage of smokers hiaving from 1 1 ta 25 cigarettes a day and a de- crease in the percentage of the ones smoking from 1 ta 10 cigarettes a day. The change of the percentage of heavy smokers (more than 25 a day) was negligible. The increase of the num- ber of cigarettes smoked ev- ery day by regular smokers and the fact that few smokers arc able ta stay in the cate- gary of occasional smokers indicate the strong depend- ency produced by nicotine.
