Whitby Council Inaugural Meeting According to a report contained in another weekly news- paper distributed in Whitby, councillor James Gartshore, in a speech made at the Council Inaugural Meeting on January Il th, charged this column, and this columnist, with "creat- ing a tremendous disservice" in Whitby. Unfortunately, I was not at the meeting so I telephoned M~4 o oWr ,4 ,0 F '4 '4 e1 0À ( TONY'S HAIRSTYLING LBlair Park Plaza 668-5441 i fflm l a 11 MM1&11mmu m BROADLOOM SALE FINAL WEEK LOTS OF REMNANTS UP TO 50% OFF DODD & SOUTER DECOR CENTRE LTD. 105 BYRON ST. S. WHITBY 668-2179 Mr. Gartshore to see what it was that created this disservice. Mr. Gartshore. told me that he had, in fact, made this charge but clarified it by saylng that he was referring to the January 8th column which dealt with my perception of this area's relationship with other areas of Whitby. The impression, however, that the people who read the news report will have gotten is that Mr. Gartshore was criticizing the column in general and fiot the January 8th column in particular. For this reason, I feel I should offer the following comments in my defense. By writing this column, I am not attempting to split West Lynde from the rest of Whitby. As a matter of fact, I have always given much space to events which involve all Whitbyites as I have to events which are primarily of interest to our subdivision. Even when I write of issues that focus on West Lynde I try to put them in a total per- spective because our concerns should be, and often. are, of concern to all of Whitbv. I shall continue to write the column as I have done in the past, and I hope that those who read it willeontinue as well. Well, bye for now. See you all next week. The Law and You i Q. I might be a woman, but I'm a better pool player than most men. So I was pretty annoyed when my boy- friend and I went to a local pocket billiards academy and were told that I could only play on a small table. I asked why, and the attendant said that the policy was onLy to let women use the small tables, since usually they were pretty poor players and tended to rip the cloth. I said I was a good player and, offered to prove it. The attendant said no - policy is policy, and I could play on the small table or not at all. This is now a matter of principle with me. What can I do, if anything? A. It is an offence under the Ontario Human Rights Code to deny anyone "services or facilities available in any place to which the public is customarily admitted on the basis of race, creed, colour, sex, marital status, nationality, ancestry or place or origin". Go down to your nearest branch of the Ontario Hum- an Rights Commission (a part of the Ministry of Labour) and fill out a complaint against the pool hall. The Commission, if it believes you have a valid complaint may mediate a settlement, or failing that, take the oper- ator to court to enforce your rights to play. You do not need a lawyer, and filing the complaint won't cost you a cent. Q. I bought a new tape recorder just before Christmas and then I received another one as a Christmas gift. I don't need two tape recorders, but the store will not give me a refund. They've offered me a credit slip but I'd rather have the money. There were no signs posted to say refunds were not given, so why won't they give me a cash refund? A. Some stores give cash refunds and others do not They don't have to post a sign. The law says all sales may be considered final unless there was an advance agreemnent to the contrary. Before you buy anthing, find out the store's policy. "THESE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, BASED ON ONTARIO LAW, ARE PUBLISHED TO INFORM AND NOT TO ADVISE. NO ONE SHOULD TRY TO APPLY OR INTERPRET THE LAW WITHOUT THE AID AND ADVICE OF A TRAINED EXPERT WHO KNOWS THE FACTS, BECAUSE THE FACTS OF EACH CASE MAY CHANGE THE APPLICATION OF THE LAW." Building MMI Bylaw Again Council's administrative :ommittee will look into the >ossibility of amending the ccessory building bylaw >nce again. At the last council meet- ng, Councillor Joy Thomp- on proposed amending the ylaw to state that green- iouses be classed as accessory >uildings and that the size imit for acce.ssory buildings, vith the exception of garages, )e- limited to five per cent )f the total lot acreage or ,000 square feet, whichever s greater. Council has dealt with the matter of greenhouses several imes in the past. This led [hompson to say "ifÈ I can ,o out of this world leaving ust one large greenhouse, I will be hapny" at council's You The C1s8iilrCô011i We style your hair your way. Need suggestions?
