In addition to Whitby, the charge is also being initiated in the Brooklîn, Ajax, Picker- ing and Oshawa exchange Inf o Calis areas. "However," said Mr. Turn- hamn, "there is fio need for any customer to ever incur Directory Assistance charges. Charges will be made only when a cuistomer is provided with a numnber that is already listed in the telephone book. In addition, there will be no charge for the first three chargeable cails a month from residence services. Al caîls from business tele- phones will be subject to the charge, when the requested number is listed in the cust- omer's directory". Special care has been taken to ensure that, upon application, persons, whose disability prevents use of a directory and those 65 years of age and over, will be exempt from charges. Introduction of the charge was requested by Bell Canada in light of the increasing volume of unnecessary calîs -to Directory Assistance. 0f the close to 700,000 calîs placed each day, com- pany-wide, more than 70 per cent. are for numbers already isted in the telephone book. Studies also show that 10 per cent of all customers place more than 50 per cent of the unnecessary calîs. As now devised, those who make unnecessary use of Directory Assistance will bear the cost of supplying this Trhought ForFoodl personalized- service. in addition, Bell Canada will be able- to provide better Directory Assistance service for callers requesting num- bers flot in the telephone book as well as for those customners who prefer to use the service instead of looking in -the book.
