PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1974, WHITBY FREE PRESS Free Press Filrsts As we predicted irn an exclusive story nearly two mon ths ago, Whitby Mayorý Des Newman will resigil his position and run in the upcoming Provincial election..he finally made it public Friday - see story page 1. MORE Free Press EXCL USI VES ..keep your*eyes open for a ma/or shopping centre on Rossland Road thatil make the Oshawa Centre.look like a plaza! Rernemberyou heard it FIRST in the Free Press. PUR THER our sources tell us that the Durham Regional Police Force is con templating closing up the Whitby build- ing on Rossland Road and operating out of Oshawa. A t the present time the, Whitby building is only being used as a 'drop-in centre' and parking lot. The detectives, and the I-D Department (photography and fingerprinting) have already been moved to Oshawa. AUl radio-dispatching is being done ftom Oshawa on two frequencies an east band (Oshawa, Bowmanville etc.) and a west band (Whîtby, Ajax and Pickering). So we won't be too surprised when the " Brilliant Chromacolor Picture Tube " Solid-State Super Videa Range Tuning System " Synchromatic 70-Position UHF Channel Selector Whitby office is closed up completely. And don't blâme local council - it will be up to thie Police Commission. k/e don't want to drop TOO MANY bombs ahl at once and give a lot of leads to our competitors, BUT ..word has it that Councillor John Goodwin might /ust be seeking the P. C nomination in Port Perry in the next provincial elec- tion. So mucli for our 'Top Secret'news exclusives for thue week.guess we needn't remind you where you heard them FIRST! Seems we have two Whitby merchants who are either leaving town or going out' of business: Pro Finn Impoets on Dundas Street and a company on Brock Sou th we heard of for the firsi' time when we heard about this..and the truth of the matter is, that at tîme of writing cari t even remem- ber the narne of tbje company. Maybe THA T is the pro- blem..if k/E have neyer heard of them before, and cari't even remember the compan>' name -- there's no doubt there are thousands of other Whitby people in the same situation. BUT GOOD NEWS ..a new delicatessen by the name of 'Mr Turkey' will be opening this Friday at 159 Brock Street North. Whitby Free Press staffer, Robin Lyon, got his big break * 100% Solid-State Chassis * Patented Power Sentry Voltage Regulator * Chromatic One-Button Tuning Thursday night~ at the McDonald 's hockey game at Iroquois Park ..seems of ail the members of press Robin was the only one to score on Ronald McDonald. Only problem is that, now Robin is ahl upset' because lie hasn't yet received his coupon for a FREE 'Big Mac' Anyway ail is not lost.... the exercise PRO VED that the Free Press 'scores' more in 14hitby than any other media! It'sÀATough, Decision Now that Whitby Mayor Des Newman has publici>' confirmed our exclusive story of nearly two montus ago on his decision to seek a provincial seat, we feel the time is righ t to make a few commen ts. His decision to rmn provinciailly has not been an easy one to make. Des has been Whitby 's chief magistrate for over nine years now, and has retained the seat election after election witz ittle or no opposition and very littie diffi- cuit>'. Being mayor (and Regional Councillor) is not a bad job, and doesn't pay too badly - about $26,000 but most of ahi it's a job that Newman KNOWkS, is comfor'abie in, and no doubt ver>' secure in retaining for a number ofyears. BUT in every mani s ife cornes a time when you are faced wi'h the decision of self-satisfaction or security. Mayor Newman chose self-satisfaction. As he pointed our in our September story he feels that because of his work with/ the province, such as on the Provincial-Municipal Liaison Committee, he has gaîned a vast amount of experience and insight into the workings of the province and i's deaiings wi/z the Municipahities and would probably be most effective at the provincial level He told the Free Press in September "J feel that at this point ini time we have a fabulous opportunit>' in this coun- try Io preserve a particular way or style of living, be it u-ban or what-ever and I've corne to the conclusion that it s Plot possible to do this without some change ini the pio- vince." Here you have a mani who, because of his sincere sensi- tivity, is willing literaily to risk everylluing to do what he thinks is in the best interest of the people. He doesn't look at it as W/zhb>' losing a mayor, but rat/zer Whitby GAIN- ING a more effectuaI person at thme provincial level - and he doesn 't differen thate bewen leveis of governmen t because lie feels the three levels of goverrimen t are "so in tertwined " Mavor Newman KNOWS tiat the. present M.P.P. for Ontario South, Bill Newman, is strong. He also knows that lie could ver;' easily lose an election to Bull Newman, yet lie mrade the decision. T/he mayor said Frida>' morning that he has "enormous confidenîce ini the staff ini this municipality " and expressed lus sincere initerest in Whitby b>' saying "I think it is a healthy thing for this (thec post of mayor) to pass on after a reasonable iength of tine " And he obviously feels that iine years is a "reasonabie lengilu of time'" There 's no doubt w;e 'l be losing a great mayor ..the caliber of w/uic/z we na>' neyer see again, but in an>' case Desrnond Newman deserves a lot of respect for making the decision he did. Lt took a REAL MAN to do it!
