PAGE 6, WEDIMESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1974, WHITBY FREE PRESS BIRD'S EYE VIEW - '~ JIM OUAI You Are What You Eat Such is life ..... That's not my theory but it is the theory of some lead- ing nutritionists and a few so-called authors in this country. The statement seems to suggest that if you constantly drink milk then you are a cow - or perhaps a cat although veterinarians tell me cats get constipated by drinking too much milk. Well I've been called worse than a cow by some women's libbers. In fact i think they were suggesting that I eat a lot of bacon, but at today"s bacon.prices I can guarantee you I'm not making a hog of myself with regards to bacon. Bad pun, I know, but have you ever thought about what you eat and how often? For instance are you the kind of person who gets up early and eats a good breakfast? A person who gets up at the last minute and hastily drinks a cup of coffee is, perhaps not a morning person. Given a choice that same person would rather stagger out of the sack around noon and start the day with lunch. While the breakfast eater is finished for the day and fast asleep at midnight the late starter is having supper at 10 p.m. and may not go to bed until 2 a.m. There are also wildly conflicting theories about which type of person is more organized. I can't use myself as an example because I am a late riser and while my home is an absolute disaster, when it comes to organization my office has to be ås organized as I can get it. I hate anything out of place at work and I like my desk to be neat and unclut- tered. It is somewhat of a split personality but maybe the office offsets the house or vice versa. Take my Editor for example. Mike likes rich cream puffy desserts but I wouldn't go so far as to suggest that he is a cream puff. He does like to go out to dances and fancy dinner parties where they serve rich and expensive food. I keep asking him how he can afford it and he slyly tells me he is slipping these little dinner adventures onto the expense account. I think he is pulling my leg but Mike is more noted for pulling only female legs so I'm really not sure. Our editor's wife,.Harje, is certainly an exception to the rule you are what you cat. If the statement were true then Marje would be a house. I'm not suggesting that Marje can be seen late at night eating great chunks off the neighbourhood domiciles but Marje can eat me under the table and get away with it. She annoys many people by eating what she wants and as much of it as she wants and staying slim and trim. The theory of you are what you eat doesn't really apply during this period of tight money and inflation either. If your weekly grocery budget has become the same disaster mine has then you too have gone the route from being a cow to a chicken and now to a fish. And even fish is go- ing up in price. At the present rate of inflation we may all become seaweed because the only thing we'll be able to afford in the stores is packaged kelp. With so many types of snack foods on the market now I think it is really impossible to type a person by what he or she eats. The worst of the snack foods is that they can really make you stack on the pounds but will supply you with absolutely ne nutrition at ail. Still, I guess if we were really interested in nutrition we wouldn't be drinking gallons of coffee and smoking cartons cf cigarettes. As for my eating habits, it is a little difficult te apply the - you are what you eat - rule. Because I get up late in the day and eat anything from pizza and beer te week-old leftover chinese foed for breakfast - or whatever you call the first meal of the day - then the rule suggests that I amn a combination between a delicatessan and a garbage can. If you smoke, drink, work bard and don't have fa regularprogram for exercismng, maybe you need some help in preparmxg your will. faiBRlnPanon hCana11an movement for personal fitness. Finess. In your heart you know it's right. Brook Bylines Here we are into, November, and only seven weeks to Christmas! Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? I know that some of you have probably finished, but for those of you that like me, haven't been so well organized, then the Snowflake Bazaar held by the U.C.W. at the United Church:In Brooklin, may well by the answer. It will be held on Saturday, November 9th, between 2 p.m. and 4:30,p.m. There will be a large collection of hand- made articles from which to choose a most pleasing gift, or you can pick out a treasure or two from the White Ele- pliant table. And to tempt you to ditch that diet, there will be the Bake Table arranged with a delectable choice of home baked goods. And while you are trying to resist temptation, or trying to decide what gift is most suitable for grandma or little Suzie, you can do it without the help of your own offspring.....because they will be entertained in their own area. You can even leave them there while you recover from your decisions and treat yourself to some coffee before you go home. All in all, a rather delightful way to spend a couple of hours on-a grey November after- noon. The Ist Brooklin Guides don't just meet at Meadow- crest School every Wednesday evening between 8 and 9 p. m. And they certainly do more than just tying knots and marching in parades.....which is what one usually associates the group with. On Saturday, 9th November, at 2:30 p.m. they will be off to the C.F.T.O. T.V. studios to watch a taping of that new show 'Definition'. Last October 19th, they participated in Jamboree of the Air, and thro' the ham radio made contact with Bay Ridges, Cornwall and Windsor. They've also been flying high with the help of Mr. Bob Heron and members of the Oshawa Flying Club. Bob and his friends took the girls, in small groups on trips over the area showing them aerial views of Oshawa, Whitby Ajax and of course Brooklin. The girls had a marvellous afternoon, and would like to convey their thanks to Bb and his friends for giving their time to the Guides. It's a pity that we can't find just one more generous spirit that could take over as Scoutniaster for the Scouts. Yes, they arc still without a leader. Don't tell me that there isn't one male in the area who couldn't give some of his time in helping these boys.....perhaps we do need devel- opment and some new blood in that case. So often I hear parents (and non-parents for that matter) moaning that there is nothing for the kids to do around here. Quite frankly l'm coming to the conclusion that what the former, at least, mean is . how can I get the kids off my hands. What all the moaners don't seem to realise is that what is really needed is good leadership, and someone who is will- îng to give up his or her time. I have met many men and women who are more than willing to arrange activities for our young people, but we do need more help as can be "PROCLAMATION" "POPPY WEEK" Take notice that the week of November 2nd (Poppy Day) to November 11th, 1974 (Remem- brance Day) has been proclaimed as Poppy Week in and for the Town of Whitby, when ail citizens are called upon to Honour the Fallen and to remember the Veterans who served in the past years. The Annual Remembrance Day Parade wili take place at 10:30 a.m., for service at the Cenotaph at 11:00 a.m., November 11th. Dated at Whitby this 6th day of November, 1974. D. G. Newman, Mayor, Town of Whitby Bahamas The Commonwealth of the Dia- hamas achieved full independ- ence from Great Britain on July 10, 19713. The Bahamas comprise nearly 700 islands and exctend over 700 miles from Florida to Haiti. Water World TeesAN Geographers and mapmnakers recognize four major bodies of W v bu water - the Pacific, Atlantic, In- dian and Arctic Oceans. The At- o ,Slyadhaty lantic and Pacific Oceans are hair. It's ar0ftent seen from the fact that we are still missing a Scoutmaster. So how about it, do we get a volunteer to lead the Ist Brooklin Scouts? Call the Assistant District Commissioner, Mr. David Dell at 668-3083. While I'm still with the Scouts.....the Apple Day was a great success with 20 bushels of apples being sold. A big thank you goes out to all those who helped by buying the apples. Those of you who are keen on trying out some square dancing don't forget that November 5th is beginners night and that you will be more than welcome at the meeting of the Brookiin Square Dance Club, at 8:15 p.m. at the Odd- fellows Hall, Bagot Street, Brooklin. To those readers who have voiced concern about the junction of No. 7 and No. 12, and who have raised the question of a safer pedestrian crossing on No. 12, Council- lor Gerry Emm did call. As the Provincial Government has jurisdiction over this stretch of highway your best policy is to get the Town Council to petition them to provide the necessary safety procedures, tho' the latter question of a pedestrian crossing was looked into a few years ago and at that time it was decided that there were not enough people having to cross the highway to warrant a crossing. That may be so. But to me I still feel that however few are crossing, they still have to take the same chances as a large number. And even tho' Thickson Road is supposed to take the brunt of the traffic, a great deal of large and small vehicles still use that No. 12. At any rate it is up to you who have raised the question.....get down to a little letter writing, and the more that write than obviously the better chances you have of getting anything done. For those who are wondering why Brooklin wasn't repainted on the water tower at the time that the tower it- self was repainted, I'm sorry that I haven't anything definite to tell you. Councillor Emm is going to bring up the subject at the next meeting of the Regional Works Committee. Oh yes, the upkeep of the water tower is the Region's responsibility. And if you read last Thursday's 'Oshawa Times' you cannot help but be wondering what they have in mind for us. Because in Ajax, it seems, they replaced the sign identifying the William A. Parish Purifica- tion Plant, with one that read the Region of Durham Purifi- cation Plant. Ajax Mayor Clark Mason succeeded ingetting a promise that the original sign would go back up. It may well save the works department time and money if they realised that local areas, tho' resigned to a Regional Govern- ment, still take pride in their original titles and prefer them as a means of identification over the more anonymous Region of Durham title. Gerry has said that he will get in touch and let us know what is happening after the next meeting. Well that is it for now. Keep the calls coming in..... 655-3750 is the number to call and ask for the Bylines. Take care and enjoy yourselves until next week. LIZ INFLATION??? CUT FOOD BIL LS BY 50%.....NOW.
