Government Study on Rauwolfia Alkaloids Un Breast Cancer OTTAWA - Health and Welfare Minister Marc Lalonde announced' that the Health Protection Branch of his department has taken im- mediate steps to have a panel of non-governmental experts conduct an independent medical review of ail avail- able data on preparations containing Reserpine or Rauwolfia alkaloids. These drugs are widely used for the treatment of high blood pre- ssure and are available only on prescription. In the most recent issue of a Ieading medicai journal, The Lancet, there are three papers which report thiat the iong-term administration to women of preparations con- taining Reserpine of Rauwol- fia aikaioids is associated with two or three fold in- crease in the incidence of breast cancer. The problem was original- ]y detected by the Boston Coliaborative Drug Surveil- lance Program. Additional retrospective studios were conducted in the United Kingdom and Finland. These studies also suggested that long-term administration of Rauwolfia derivatives was associated with an increased incidence of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. Officiais of the Health Protection Branch have been in close touch with Americûn and British health authorities on this problem. It is con- sidered the data reported in the three studies are import- and enough to be brought to the immediate attention of physicians, and require a re-assessment of the role of Rauwolfia alkaloids in mod- ern therapy. This review will take several weeks to complete; a further announcement will be made in due timne. In the meantime, Cana- dian physicians may wish te re-assess the treatment of their patients receiving these drugs. An information letter is being sent te AIl (anadian physicians ini erder te miake thein aware etffthc problemn. Food Facts & Fallaicies Q. Are Carbohydrates more fattening tlïan pretein? A. Thus, the community news reported on is one wcek late. Therefore, next week I will report on the W.L. C.A. general meeting which took place on September 3Oth. STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING In early June and late August, meetings were held to discuss assessment. On both occasions the question of reassessment was posed, and, apparently, immediately dis- misse d.1On Wednesday of last week, an assessor appeared at our house. He looked at our house very-carefully, and advised us that other assessment staff would be around later to measure. Two days later, thée-people across the street were visited by the assessor. When the assessor was asked the reason for this activity, th e reply was forth- comiîng that it was in response to the number of complaints. He added that the office had some 600 houses to do which sounds very much like the whole sub-division. 1 have my own opinions as to why this sudden about- face by the assessment office. First, Bill Hoffman's appeal is with the O.M.B. and given the "people" orientation of its decisions in recent years, the assessors can't be certain of winning. If they don't win, they are stuck withi a precedent. Secondly, if they are receiving complaints, then it stands to rcason so are the politicians. Thirdly, if assessment goes down, se will revenue (iLe. taxes). Therefore, why flot reassess everyone. pick up the substantial improvements, and thus lighten tlic possibility of a large overaîl decrease in assessmient. A reassessment such as this carnies two edges. Some rnay benerit, while others may suffer. TAXES If you read the local press, you will have noticed a great deal of space being devoted to local politicians cern- menting on the need for more business and industry in the Duirha-m Region in general, and in Whitby in particular. Tlie ether nighî, Global News did a feature on the situation.
