Upon arrivai, I saw some men and women marching in front of the building carrying signs such as, "Free Nurses From Tyranny of Today's Law", "Hospital Belongs To Ail People", "Abortion Is Murder", etc. It was quite clear from an outset that this was a well-organized anti-abortion demonstration in support of tlie local nurse who has objected to participate in the abort(ion operations. Con- trary to the hospital's rules and regulations, suddenly the whole'attention was focused towards this one, Mrs. Anna Marie Palmer 'and her religious beliefs. According to one local paper, Mrs. Palm er has made a. fairly sweeping statement: "Abortion is murder in the first degree". And, if this wasn't enough to keep the pot boiling, the paper in question kept up the pro-Palmer campaign with geins like these, "Abortion tumns hospital into a slaughter- house" and "Nurse's stand on abortion is commendable". Now, common fellas! iust think for a minute who's going to change the hospital's policy on abortions. Not Mrs. Palmer, nor some of the editorial writers. So, stop yapping in public! I believe that Mrs. Palmer erred in staging a protest march and hoping that the hospital administration wilI relent because of her strong religious beliefs against ab- ortions per se. One must remnember that nurses' duties are to look after sick people and hospital patients. Also, she must be prepared to assist doctors in various operations regardless of her personal beliefs. 1 can set a precedent set by Jehovah's Witness nurse refusing to take part in blood transfusions. Some vegetarian nurses could deprive pat- ients of meat. This sort of practice can go on and on. In no time a complete anarchy would reign at hospitals where nurses of different oetigious backgrounds are employed. Therefore, 1 say, let's stop these foolish demonstrations. After aIl, if the patient asks for an abortion, her wishes should be fulfilled. Moral judgements should not be left to hospital nurses or medical doctors. Those judgements should rest solely with the patient. And, saying that the abortion is murder is a lot of bunk. What murder? In Russia, for instance, an abortion in the early stages of pregnancy is often used as a forin of birth control. Russian medical journals point out that the operation, if perfornied at a welI equipped medical centre is quite harmless to the patient. It is almost like a trip to a dentist's chair. Personally, 1 would like to see less abortions performed in our hospitals and more emphasis placed on various birth control methods.
