ELECT "GERRY EMM" "If the work load requires me full time -1 will be available full time" Election to be held ~~%~7r A Monday Oct. 1st. lla.m. to 8p.m. ADVANCE POLL SAT. SEPT. 29th 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Municipal Building WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27. 1973, PAGE 3 Letters to- the Editor Dear Sr, The organizers of the Markham Fair are once again planning to include a "greasy pig contest" in this year's program, despite the seizure of five animals from a sim- iliar event staged last year. The contest was held last year in the face of requests from the Ontario Humane Society that it be cancelled. Attempts were made to stage the event despite a direct order issued under the auth- ority of the Ontario Societv for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. One of the animals seized had a severely broken leg and had to be humanely destroyed. The Society.has again ask- ed that the event be cancelled. It is hoped that the people of Markham will oppose this event and protest it's inclus- ion in this year's program. Needless to say Inspectors Dear Editor, As a candidate in the up- coming election, I read with deep satisfaction your edit- orial concerning the apathetic attitudes so evident during this campaign. During my own campaign I have endeavoured to make myself and my platform ava- ilable to the people. I must admit I left the Whitby For- um disappointed with the Dear Sir, I would like to congratu- late you on your last week's editorial. It is about time that the public was made aware of the apathy of our local candidates which is ref- lected in the indifference of the electorate. It is incredible that there is such a lack of interest in the decisions affecting our lives and tax dollars for the coming three years. If a person is willing to stand for public office he should pre- sent himself to the people and have his platform known and challenged at every opportunity. I am most dismayed at the participation in the Whit- by forum on Sept. 18 and feel that the public should see that the candidates elect- ed are those who made them- selves available to the voter. I am, Yours faithfully, Brian G. Crangle. MALTA SOCIAL CLUB GALA DINNER & DANCE On Saturday night, at the Heydenshore Pavilion, the Whitby Malta Social Club held a gala Dinner and Dance to celebrate their fifth anniversary and to crown Miss Rose Pisani as Miss Malta Social Club, Ontario County. Several dignataries were in attendance including the Malta National Trade Commissioner to Canada, John Pisani, Mayor Des Newman, Presidents of the Malta Social Clubs from Toronto, Oshawa and St. Thomas, several M.P.'s from surrounding districts and local council- lors. Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of a trophy by the Acting President of the Whitby Jaycees. The award and a cheque for $50. was made honouring the Malta Social Clubs participation and level of excellence in the annual County Town Carnival Parade. This year's entry which featured the 1958 Champion Whitby Dunlops was generally acknowledged to be one of the best. Unfortunately an error, by the Jaycees, left the club with no award. In order to rectify the the mistake the Whitby Jaycees had a special trophy made and presented it to the Club with their apologies and sincere congratulations. The success of the dinner can best be summed up by Vice - President Claude Schembri's remark "We were turning people away. We could have sold out a hall twice this size." wýý 1 of the Society will be present at the fairgrounds and any attempt, to stage a greasy pig contest or any similar event will be met with the necessary action. It is a criminal offence to cause any animal unneces- sary pain or suffering. Yours truly, T.I. Hughes, General Manager, Ontario Humane Society. lack of interest and challenge I received. I sincerely hope the elect- orate realizes that in three years a lot can happen - because of an informed choice on an uninformed guess. Sincerely, Chuck Roche Candidate for Trustee, Separate School Board.
