COURT REPORT 19- The Supreme Court Assizes for the Province of Ontario will begin in the Ontario County Administration of Justice Building, Rossland Road, Whitby, on Monday, September 24th. It looks like a white glove Court for His Lordship, the Hlonourable Justice Keith, this Session. Court Officiais here state that they "don't expect thet there wilI be any criminal matters to be placed before His Lordship this session." When there are no criminal matters being placed before the presiding Justice of the Supreme Court there is a ceremony of presenting a pair of white gloves to His Lordship, This signifies the fact that the Session wiIl comprise of civil matters only. "BIT 0F TIME TO DRY OUT" "The Court is giving you a bit of time to dry ouit as alcohol seems to be the problem." Provincial Court Judge H.W. Jermyn told Alfred Grant of Whitby. The man, who had pleaded guilty to being drunk in a public place and being in breach of probation was sentenced to 30 days in jail for violating the terms of his probation. i-é was f ined $50. or 30 days in jail to be concurrent to any previous sentence on the charge of being drunk in a public place. Cbnstable VanDoleweerd was on patrol in the Camp Hood area when he saw the accused man. Mr. Grant "appeared to. be in a drunken stupor." Mr. Grant failed to comply with the terms of his Probation, which stated that he was "to remain away from his parent's home. Hie was at that residence in violation of his recognance," the Court was told. The accused man had been in custody since Sunday, Saptember 9th. He "hasn't a steady job or a permanent place to live since his parents asked him to remain away from their home." "Alcohol seems to be the problem and he needs time to dry out," commented Judge Jermyn. "A GI R LSHOU LD NOT BE OUT AFTER ONE IN THE MORNI NG" "It is difficult for me to understand why a girl should be out after one in ithe morning,' Provincial Court Judge Jermyn told Valerie Richmond, 17, of Ajax. His Honour suspended the passing of sentence on the charge of drinking alcoholic beverages while under the age of 18 years. Miss Richmond pleaded guilty to the charge. The passing of sentence was suspended for 12 months on the basis that, "when Mother says 'stay home', you stay home that particular night. You neyer will be asked to do something that is not good for you. I am suspending the passing of sentence for 1 2 months on the premise that you do what mother and father request you to do. You are to be of good behavious," Provincial Court Judge Jermyn said. Constable McGregor of the Whitby Police Force, in ansvver to a complaint on August 17th, about 1 :15 a.m. went to Camp Hlood on Cochrane Street, Whitby. There he investigated four people, one of whom was Miss Richmond. Hier eyes were bîoodshot and she admitted that she had been drinking. - The grade il student's parents were in Court with her when the Court passed judgement on the girl, who was with Ieft him 'to sleep it off* in the celîs,' the 'Court was told. "Fortunately, in this case, he was drunk and not dead as the Police had feared," Crown Attorney Edward Howell said. The grade il student and part - time worker was told by Provincial Court Judge H. W. Jermyn, "don't come in here again. You are on probation for 12 months, be home every night at il o'cîock' and no liquor, report once a month to the Probation Off icer. "It is the youth's second offence for drinking while under age." He was fined $75. or 15 days in jail, upon request, was given 30 days In whlch to pay his f ine. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
