__mit WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1973, PAGE 7 SPORTS REPORT BASEBALL The Whitby Knights of Columbus Tykes advanced to the Ontario Finals on the weekend with a pair of victories over Stratford, trouncing the visitors at Peel Park 12 - 2 on Saturday, and winning 14 - 10 in Stratford on Sunday in the third and deciding game of the series. after Stratford had taken the opener a week ago 9 - 8 in extra innings. In the remaining series Leamington and South Windsor, Port Colborne and Dundas are playing off to declare a Western Ontario representative. Club officiais are hopeful that there wil not be \ too long a layoff and would like to see the final series get underway this weekend. In WMBA Pee Wee House League action a unique situation bas taken place where every series in quarter and semi - finals bas gone to a third and deciding game before a winner was declared. In the semi - final series Seaway Motors bounced back to take the second game 9 - 6 and force a third contest, won 14 - 8 by Mercantile to give themn the series and a berth in the WMBA Pee Wee House League Finals. In the other series the story was repeated with Lions who had won the opener, droppmng the second gaine 14 - 8 to Brooklin Legion. In the third match of the series, Lions roared again and came out 23 - 8 winners. First game of the WMBA Pee Wee Championship series between Mercantile and Lions was scheduled for last night, with the second game at Peel Park on Thursday. A big event on the local basebail calendar is scheduled to take place' on Saturday when the Umpires of the WMBA and the Coaches and Managers will clas in a friendly 'grudge' match to settie once- and for ail. it Tlhe Whitby Knights of Columbus Tyke basebali club bas brought the Eastern Ontario Tyke "A" championship to Whitby for the fourth consecutive year, defeating Cobourg two straigbt in the final round. The K of C's won the opener 24 - O at Peel Park and posted a 14 - 3 vctory at Cobourg's Donegan Park to win the second game and the titie in a contest where the victory margin could have been extended by the Whitby club had they 6'gone ail out.' The outcome was neyer really in doubt as the K of C's ran up an eleven run lead by the second inning, picking up twelve hits and capitalizing on some sloppy play by the Cobourg club. lhe climax to a fine E.O.B.A. season was aiso a reward for the trio of AI MacDonald, i Jermyn and Keith MacDonald who worked with the club to mould them int a championship team. In Tyke House League action, the initial playoff series, a round robin affair, saw Rae Jones and Son Realty, J - C Gulf, Pal - 0 - Pak, Brown's Foodmaster, and Garrard Road Firefighters Advance to the next round with K - Mart, Consumers Gas, Rotary, Dairy Queen, and the I.O.O.F. clubs bowing out. Dairy Queen and Rotary put up the strongest battles of the series. ln Exhibition action, Longueuil, Quebec, edged the Whitby Legionaires in a three game Pee Wee series played at Peel Park on Saturday and Sunday. In the series opener, Whitby won out over tbe visitors 4- 2. Both clubs were not at their best for the Saturday morning opener, with the Longueuil club travel weary and the Legionaires playing for the first tinie in nearly a month. Saturday afternoon the clubs provided the fans with a tense thriller won 1 - 0 by Longueuil. Outstanding player of the series had to be Longueul catcher Miario Parazelli, one of the finest pee wee age catchers to be seen here in many years.
