WHITBY FREE PRESS, TrHURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 1973, PAGE 5 IOTORING wlth Mike surfes$ For the first time ever, a driving skill test was heid last Sunlday at the, Dunlop Canada parking lot as one of the County Town Carnival events. Jeff Christie, ably assisted by Ruth Halliday and other members of Oshawa Motor' Sport Club have to be congratulated for doing an excellent job or organizig and running the event which proved to be a tremendous success despite the fact that the D.S.T. was up against strong conipetition ini the form of a Councillors Soccer Game and the ever popular Motorcycle Scrambles. Nevertheless, some 57 entrants competed ini thirteen classes giving the numerous spectators exciting entertain- ment worth watching. The highlight of the day was when Counicillor Gerry Emm showed- up in his classic Model 'T' Ford and proceeded to show the "1hot - shoes" that a rank novice ini a slightly underpowered (and stock) machine could still manoeuvre the course without knocking over any pylons. Gerry deserves a lot of credit for taking part. Because of bis tight schedule that day he was unable to have time to walk the course and acquaint himself wîth the route, but stili fearlessly went ahead and drove it anyway, Mayor Des Newman was also supposed to compete, but was unable to make it ... possibly because he didn't want Gerry Emm in bis Model 'T' showing him up? Anyway, the results went somêthing like this: A-Stock, lst Hannu Halminen, 2nd Dale Fessenden; B - Stock, lst Flannu Halminen, 2nd Dale Fessenden, 3rd i Famme; C - Stock, lst Jeff Christie, 2nd George Gilroy, 3rd Chris Turner; D - Stock lst George Gilroy, 2nd Jim Famme, 3rd B. Schacliter, 4th Peter Welke, Sth Norm Krmits; E - Stock, I st Jeif Christic, 2nd Jim Famme, 3rd George gilroy;, F - Stock, tst Bernice Annidal, 2_nd Idalo Cappuc- citti, 3rd Carey Reed; C - Prepared 1lst Don Clement, 21ld John Thomson, 3rd Cavin Jones, 4th Sylvia Thomson; D - Prepared 1 st Ralph Robinson, 2nd Don Clement. Bernice Annidal won the Ladies Class and also the Whitby Esso Centre Trophy for the best runner of the day computed by a differential system. The trophies and awards will be presented Monday night August 6th at the Legion Hall, Byron St. S. The U.S.A.C. race scheduled to run at Mosport Park August 3 - 4 - 5 has been cancelled. The inability of USAC to provide a representative field of 'Indy' cars and drivers for the event was cited by Mosport Park president and general manager Harvey Hudes as the reason for the cancellation. Vice - President Bernie Kamin told the FREE PRESS that "Mosport Park would rather have no event that to provide sub - standard entertainment for fans who are coming expecting as usual the best." Hudes said basically the same thing, "[n spite of continuai reassurances by USAC officiais that Indy Drivers in [ndy Cars would enter, it became obvious that they couid not deliver the package. We decided tocace the race raether than to p)resent a show to the ALL HOMECOMING GUESTS PLEASE REGISTER AT MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS DUNDAS STREET WEST- SONDAI CHURON SERVICES Homecoming visitors and Whitby residents are iîîvited to' attend services at the town's churches August Sth and go on a guided tour of the churches the following Monday.
