UNITED WAY NEWS RELEASE The Oshawa-Whitby United Appeal Way will kick off its 1973 Campaign on September 2Oth with a goal of $615,060. Campaign Chairman Bob Wilson announced Monday. This year's target represents a 6.9 percenlt increase over the 1972 objective of $575,000. and is designed to meet the increased operating costs of the Appeal's 27 member agencies. "If the response of the businesses, industries and peo- pie of Oshawa and Whitby is as excellent this year as it was in 1972," Mr. McLaughlin, United Appeal President, said, "we're confident we will reach our objective." The $61 5,000. figure was arrived at after careful review by U.A.'s budget committee of the requirements originally submitted by the agencies. Every year the agencies submit a projectedl budget to the United Way budget committee. These budgets are carefully reviewed and money compromises must be made to establish how the net proceeds may be distributed to eacb group. In ihost cases, there was some pruning of expenses. In two however, the Big Brother Association and the John Howard Society, substantial increases were recom- mended to provide for professional counselling. To now, all counselling done by the two organizations has been handled by volunteers. An increasingly large share of United Way support is granted' to recreation, an area in which the local govern- ment is also assuming greater responsibility. Campaign Chairman for 1973 is Bob Wilson, who led last year's successful campaign drive. His committee chairmen are Doug Young, commercial; Dick Baker, corporate; Frank Taylor, chain outlets; Don Raitt, General Motors; Tom Simmons, unionls; and Dr. Gordon Willey, public employers. Chairmen are still to be named for the special name..and ýrofessionial committees. Jim Kirkconnell is over-ali campaign consultant and Bill Lupton publicity and promotion chairman. This year the United Appeal will concentrate on its payfoll deduction campaign, in an effort to involve more and more area firms and employees in this most effective wuy of United Way giving. "The United Appeal Way is not just another agency, but an economical, sensible and effective way of collectîng the funds needed to enable the 27 agencies which make up the Appeal to serve people.1" said Wilson. "When you give the United Way, you give to a fatherless boy, to the dedicated work of the Salvation Army, to the abnormal and normal child, to those struck by disaster, economnically, socially, mentally and physically. "If governments were to take over what the United Appeal does, costs would increase many timnes. The hundreds of voluntary workers who give freely and willingly of thefr timne would be replaced by paid civil servants."
