PAGE 12, THURSDAY, AUGUST 2,1973, WHIITBY FREE PRESS UN EUROPE Paris, France What Paris needs today is a good funnyman like Art. Buchwald. It seems to me that no one at the present time is writing a huniorous column about French People in Paris and their everyday peculiarities. This gap must be filled sooner or later. But, only a North American should be assigned to this important task. A French newspaperman would probably neyer see the funny side, since he would be part of the life style. First, let's look into the hotel business. Most likely, you will find a little shabby hotel with four flights of stairs, no shower, but bot and cold running water. You wilI notice that the building is almost falling apart, but at the entrance you wilI be greeted with anl impressive Iooking sign - Grand Hotel Sud. lncidentally, that was the hotel 1 happened to [mnd in search of a tiny room with modern conveniences. 1 found the tiny room alright, but, speaking of conveniences, weIl, 1 better not say too much, or next time l'il be thrown out of the country. Then, when you ask for a wake - up caîl, you may have some explaining to do. 1 asked the desk clerk to wake me up at 7 a.ni. And, needless to say, he woke me up an hour earlier. One day I asked hini to take a message, if anybody cails me. Be took the message alright, but I Iearned about the contents of my mnessage two days later. The explanation was - you guessed it - that I wasn't in my roomn at the time the young lady had called. There are other things, of coursé, that will make you grin and bear it. For instance, the tipping is a very fine art in Paris and almost perfected by French waiters and cafe owners. The secret of it al is (o puy the waiter the right amount ini French francs, no other currencee please. Let's say that your cafe au lait costs you one and a haif francs. If you will pay the exact amount, you'll make hini very, very angry because you're not allowing anything for the tip. But, if you give him two francs, he'Il keep the haif franc and thus make you very, very mad. You wilI say it's highway robbery by keeping 50 cents to himself. But, the ever - smiling waiter wilI, nevertheless, accuse you of being a cheapskate. So next time, you will make your own coffee - the instant one - and 1 guarantee there won't be any tipping problems. While in Paris, I learned that the Opera Bouse bas also problems galore. At present, it is being renovated with help from the French Government. If my figures are right, the Government has shelled out 12 million francs to modernize the old building. lIbe money is there, but flot always available to the people in charge of the project. l'm told that in some instances the management finds bard to collect ail signatures for funds. It just happens that there is always an officiai wbo's away or out - of - town. And, if from five signatures needed, one is missing, it means you cannot get the money. In Government circles everything moves at a snail's pace. Finally, as I promised, a word about French women. 1 think they're great. They radiate a certain kind of cha- rm that the North American women will neyer understand. French girls are also very feminine, well dressed, astute and great conversa tionalists. However, they are less oriented sexually and slightly timid. And believe it or not, French women are not supporters of Women's Lib. They stili believe that it's nice to please a man.
