PAGE 16, THURSDAVI JULY 26, 1973, WHITBV FREE PRESS GO KARTS Family Kartways, on Highway 12, two miles north of downtown Whitby will be the scene of an open go - kart race during the County Town Carnival. .A 10 - lap race for light and heavyweight classes will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. August 4th for ages 15 and under and 16 and over. Time trials will be held during the previous week to determine competitors. The go - kart race has been a popular event at the carnival for several years, drawing large crowds. Entry forms are available at Family Kartways and at the Chamber of Commerce office, 117 Green Street, Whitby. HISTORY Whitby's historic past will corne alive in pictures during the County Town Carnival, iuly 2-7th to August 6th. For three nights during the carnival the Whitby Histor- ical Society wîll present a show of stides depicting the growth and development of the county town from 1860 to the 1930's. The slides are taken from a collection of more than 1,300 photographs ini the archives of the historical society and the Thomas Bouckley Collection. The slide show, under the title of Homecoming Carnival of History -- Pageant of the Past, will be held at 8:30 p.m. iuly 3th, August Ist and August 2nd in the Centennial Building Theatre. Admission of SI. for adults and 50 cents for children is being charged to cover the rentaI of the theatre. The pictures, including the old post office, town hall, Ontario Ladies' College, the old Perry Castle, and numerous scenes in downtown Whitby have been collected by the historical society over the past three years. * Most have neyer been exhibited or seen by Whitby citizens in more than 50 years. Some of the Most - unusual pictures are photographs of the dedication of the cenotaph in 1924, and the visit of the Govornor General, Lord Aberdeen in 1898. 1A 'commentary on the slides will be offered by Brian Winter, archivist of the historical society, who was responsible for obtaining the pictures and making them into slides. Mr. Winter hias shown the slides to the Whitby Rotary Club, YMICA Ladies' Take a Break, Chamber of Commerce and Asbburn Homecoming group during the past six months. Refreshments wil be provided by the Whitby Theatre Company. A number of the pictures will be on display in down - town store windows from August 1 st to 6th and in the town hall on the same days. The town hall display will also feature early documents related to Whitby's history, taken from the historical society's archives. Mucli of the einphasis of Homnecoming '73 will be on Whitby's history and its place in Ontario County for the past 120 years. TOUR A do - it - yourself tour of Whitby's historic sites, courtesy of the Whitby Historical Society is one of the many special items planned for Homecoming '73 during the County Town Carnival. A list of 15 historic buildings and a mnap showing their locations will ba available throughout the carnival, July 27 to August 6 at the Chamber of Commerce office, 117 Green Street, the Lynde House Museurn, on Highway 2 at Lynde Creek, and the Legion information booth on Brock Street at-Centennial Park. The buildings include the Ontario Ladies' College, Centennial Building, St. John's Anglican Church, Al Saints Anglican Church, thé' Bible Church (old St. Andrews), the Brookin MilI, Dryden Farm, Ashburn Community Centre, and the boyhood home of Hamar Viscount, Greenwood. The tour is designed so visitors and residents can drive to the sites in their cars and look at the buildings, or take photographs. Sinice most of the buildings are privately owned, no access wiIl be permitted to themn, without consent of the owners. Plans are now in the works to have a bus tour cover the 15 sites. The Lynde House Museum, Whitby's hîstoric house fromn the War of 1812, wiII be open from 3 p.m. to 5p.m., weekdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.mn. weekendsfo July 27th to August 6th for carnival visitors. WHI TBY ARTS OnIy a few days are left to enter the County ToM"' Carnival Logo Contest, sponsored by Whitby Arts Inc. A $100. first prize is offered to the winner, who will be chosen at 3 p.m. August Sth at the Station on the corner of Victoria and Henry Streets. The closing date for entries is July 29th. A logo is a graphic symbol describing the carnival's function, which will be placed on letterheads and programs. Ail entrants must be residents of Whitby. Entries must be on white bristol board 12 and 16 inches and suitable for reproduction. Any number of colours can be used. There is a limnit of two entries per person. Each entry must be accompanied by an officiai entry form on the back which can be picked up at the station fromn 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. any Sunday. Entries must be delivered to the Station before July 29th. Once submitted they will become the property of Whitby Arts. The coniiest is not open to members and immediate famnilies of the board of directors of Whitby Arts, the carnival committee or the judges and their immediate families. No commercial entries will be accepted.
