WHITBV FREE PRESS, THUASDAV, JUNE 14, 1973, PAGE 5 MOTORINO with Mike Burgess,,.' The Labatts Blue Can-Amn roared to a start fast Sunday under sunny skies and 70o temperatures with Mark Dono- hue in his Porsche 917-30-T in' the pole position and Can-Am newcomer lody Scheckter alongside in a Porsche 917-30-T. Donohue qualified with a record breaking time of 1:14.1 at 119.468 mph. Scheckter was next witb a 1 ; 15.8 at 116.788 mph. The second row of the twenty car grid had another two Porsche 917-10-T's with Charlie Kemp and teammate George Foîlmer aboard. Folîmer qualified right behind Scheckter with a 1: 15.9 at 116.635 mph. lite third row was shared by a Porsche 917-10-T driven by Hurley Haywood and a McLaren M8D driven by lohn Cordts of Huntsville, Ontario. At the end of the first Iap, leader Mark Donohue was passed by lody Scheckter wbo was really Ietting it ail bang out in the corner to do it. Two laps later at the end of the third, Donohue tired ol following Scheckter put bis foot in it calling on al of the 1200 horsepower powered by Scheckter to regain the Iead. On the fifth lap Donohue was in the process of lapping liin Butcher (McLaren M8C) in corner 8 when tliings got a littie mixed up and Mark ploughed into the rear of Butcher causing Mark to'pit with body damage. This unscbeduled pit stop proved to be very costîY for Donohue as be lost three laps before he was able to re-enter the race. To the excited spectators numbering over 50,000., and probably dloser to 75,000,. Donohue's dilemma seemed a repeat of fast year's Can-Am when be had to pit witb a stuck turbocharger valve and then bad to play catch-up. No Iess a fighter, and no less fearless, Mark started turning it on and by the end of the fifteentb bad moved up to tentb place. Meanwbile, Scbeckter held onto tbe lead until the 29th Iap where Scheckter went off 'the track with a flat tire and other unreported problems. Charlie Kemp moved up from second to first. At the end of the half-way mark (40 laps) it was Porsche, Porsche and Porsche! Charlie Kemp was still holding down the lead followed by Hans Wiedmer and George Folîmer. Donohue was stillinii tenth place. Ten laps later the first three positions were unclianged. Donohue had moved up to ninth. On the fifty-fifth lap George Folîmer who was running second started slowing down and pulîed off the track at corner five. Hans Wiedmer moved back into second behind Charlie Kemp. After 60, the only change was Donohue moving up into eighth, but stili five laps down from the leader. It appeared that the body damage suffered by Donohue's Porsche was making it impossible to run competitively and he was continually losing time to the leader Charlie Kemp. When the checkered flag came down it was still Charlie Kemp in front to take the first Can-Am win of the season. Kemp, who was the guest speaker fast week at the Oshawa Motor Sp'ort Club's monthly meeting, is 35 years old was until recently an Account Executive with the Jackson, Mississippi office of Merril Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smnith. He is devoting his entire time now to the Charlie Kemp continued on witb bis achievements picking up a second in the 1970 Sebring 12 Hour, lite Manufacturer's Title in the '72 IMSA Camel GT Challenge Series, flot to mention 12 ILap records he holds in B/Production, 3 in A/Production and GT Class, and one CHARLIE KEMP AT SPEED in A/Sports Racing. In 1972 Kemp drove the Holiday Inn Lola 222 to a IOtb place standing in the Can-Amn series. He started fine races, finished seven. His best efforts were 4th at Road Atianta', and Sth at Mid-Ohio. After his Can-Am win Kemp said that the car had run fiawlessly and he had even backed off the thrust of the turbocharger to save the car!
