MOTORING with Mike Burgess Nq 8088B Y RINZL ER COMES TO TOWN Can-Am driving champion George Folîmer is the type of guy who can neyer leave welI enough alone. Folîmer, who won the 1972 Can-Am series in the car he will drive in the $75-,000. Labatt's Blue Can-Am at Mosport, June 8, 9, and 10, couldn't be content with a winning car that bas been touted as the fastest roadl racing machine in the world. His turbocharged Porsche 917-10 is undergoing ext- ensive modifications ini time for this year's Can-Ami opener,* the first of fine races with more than a mil- lion dollar jackpot. "The car wiIl even look different" said Folimer, who missed the Labatt's Blue Can-Amn last year. He did not take over for injured Mark Donohue until the second race-, Foîlmer says, car owner Bobby« Rinzler, who bought a matcbed set of Porsches from Roger Penske for a reported $250,000. originally didn't intend to make ex- tensive modifications to the cars that had walked away with the Can-Am series last season. "But," said Folîmer, "Porsche came up with a few new wrinkles. They are always developing and improving, so it looks like we'il have some pretty significant ch- anges." Follmer's teammate on the Rinzler squad is Can-Ami veteran Charlie Kemp, of Jackson, Miss., is getting his f- irst chance to drive really top-notch machinery, Kemp and Folîmer will be in cars with "considerably more power" than the Folimer - Donohue duo hiad during the 1972 season, the first timne in five years that team McLaren cars did flot win the series. The Penske team with Folîmer and Donohue had six &itories in nine races last year, and two of their losses could be considered flukes. ln'72, Penske's Porsches used a maýimum of 1.000 horse power for qualifying and adjusting the turbocharger to produce 850 HP. for the actual races. This year, reports from the Porsche factory at Stutt gart, Germany, indicate that the Can-Am Porsches will bave 1,250 horse to play with. 1Altbough the Rinzler team is closely associated with the Porsche Factory, Folîmer says there are no attempts to make the cars carbon copies of the new machine being built for Donobue. "Actually, Mark's car is another program," said Fol- Imer. "It is designated the 917-30 and it will be a longer wheel base than what we will be running. It will also be physically different, a much, larger Iooking car, longer and wider. We'll stick witb the shorter car, but we're developing other areas." Folîmer expects the shorter 917-lO's will have an adv- antage over Donohue's car on the tight, twisty tracks like Mosport. In tests, the new 917-30 that Donohue wilI drive bas already shown that it is faster on the straight- vmys than last year's cars. Folîmer bas adopted a wait - and - see attitude toward the flock of turbocbarged Chev-powered cars. ".4 tbink the UOP Shadow (Jackie Oliver's car) wil 'TilI next week, Hlappy Motoring!
