ONTA RIO PROVINCIAL POLICE* Whitby Detachment, of the Ontario Provincial Police, bas opened it's doorsto the public for this week, May 13-19, in conjuniction with National Police Week. Whitby Detachnient was established in 1949 with a compliment of 4 men. It is presently staffed by a Staff Sergeant, a Sergeant, 5 Corporals, 43 Con- stables and 1l Civilian Personnel. The Whitby Detachment provides police services to Uxbridge Township, Reach Township, Port Perry, Scugog Township, East Whitby Township, Pickering Village and 7 Concessions of Pickering Township. ibis eincompasses an area of approximately 308 square miles. The Detachment provides police ser- vices to approximately 22,000 permanent residents in this area, as well as patrolling 64 miles of Kings High- way, 138 miles of County Roads and 543 miles of Township Roads. Crimuinal investigation is one of the main services provided by Whitby Detachment. There are 4 plain- clothes and 4 uniform officers, which handle aIl occur- rences of a criminal nature. These occurrences vary from crimes of a minor nature to the more serious crimes against life and property. Another essential service provided by Whitby De- tachment is traffie patrol and enforcement. During 1972 traffic officers at Whitby Detachment investi- gated 1 ,676 traffic accidents which resulted in 23 deaths, 700 injuries and approximately Si ,183,000. in property damage. The Detachnient provides 24 hour cruiser patrol of the 745 miles of roads in the area. In 1972, 4,500 traffic charges were laid against motorists by officers on cruiser and motorcycle patrol and radar enforcemnent, in an effort to reduce the number of accidents ini the area. The Whitby De- tachment is equipped with a breathalyzer machine, operated by 5 officers trained as technicians. 539 drinking drivers were tested on this machine in 1972. Ia the summer months, Whitby Detachment pro- vides marine patrol on Lake Scugog and Lake Ontario, off Pickering Township. The Marine detail enforces boating regulations and checks boaters for safety equipment. The Detachment also provides a permanent Acci- dent Prevention and safety officer, who visits each of the 3,600 students ini 17 local area schools, twice year- ly witli Safety Education Programmes designed to promote child safety to and from school and in the home. The Detachment is divided into 4 platoons to pro- vide' the maximum amount of personnel working at onie time and stili allow an officer one week-end per month with his family. An officer is assigned a crui- ser, at the start of bis shift and patrols a designated area for an 8 hour shift. Whitby Detachment is equipped with 12 patrol cruisers and 4 motorcycles. Each patrol cruiser logs an average of 7,f000 miles per month. Motorcycles are used to patrol Hwy. 401 during periods of peak traffic flow, and holiday weekends. Motorcycles pro- vide a valuable service to summer motorists by being able to move through stalled traffie to render assis- tance to accident victims faster, and to clear traffic stoppage and ensure the orderly movement of vehicles. Each officer in each patrol vehicle is in constant communication with Whitby Detachment by radio. The Communications section of Wbitby Detachment is staffed by trained civilian radio operators who are equipped with radio and teletype equipment for com- munication with other O.P.P. and Municipal Depart- ments. 'The Whitby Detachment has been recently equipped with a computer information terminal linked to the R.C.M.P., and most other major Police Forces in Canada. This terminal provides rapid records and police information to officers on patrol in the area. The Communication equipinent also provides rapid access to scuba teams, canine teams, aiîcraft and many other specialized services provided by the Ontario Provinicial Police.
