By ALEX KALNINS WHITBY-Last month, Whit- by Fire Department received 24 calls, a record number for this time of the year. On many occasions firemen risked their own ives responding to-fire alarms both local and outside Whitby's municipal bound- aries. Fire Chief Ed Crouch praised their men for "an excellent job" they have done in the past. "Winter, months are, the toughest for our departrnent," he noted "since most of the fires ar e caused by overheated furnaces or careless smoking." During the month of Jan- uary, Whitby firefighters an- swered 18 cails, most of minor nature. However, the last month, said the fire chief, proved to be the most hectic one for his I4 fui-tîme firefighters and ten stand-by volunteers. Whitby firemen during this critical period are credited with saving hundreds of lives, and untold amount in busi- ness properties. "OnIy quick action by our d e p art men t," said Chief Crouch "prevented a would-be disaster at a recent fire in Anderson High School." This month also got off to a blazing start with a $22,000 house fire on Taunton Road, east of Thickson Road. Six firefighting units were dispatched to battle the morn- ing blaze. It is believed the fire was, caused by an overload of electrical circuits. The investi- gation is underway to pin- point the cause of the fire. Fire officiais told the Free Press the pre-estimated dam- age may go higher after ail information has been turned in. Murray Brown, owner of the house, was relaxing after a night-shift work when the fire broke out.
