The Town of Whitby is very fortunate to have so many men willing to give up their free time to coach our sons. Whether it is House League or All-Star, Minor Mite or Junior "B", it takes many hours of work by these volunteers. These men who coach, manage or train these teams are dedicated to the job, soine have no sons involved in minor hockey, and some have sons old enough to help coach, but they still come out. Some people feel that once they have paid their money for minor hockey registration, that this is where parental involvement ends. This is not true. The men and boys of minor hockey can always use help in the dressing room to tighten skates and so on. The money paid to minor hockey is for ice rentals, equipment, referees, etc., it does not provide a baby sitting service. If your son is involved in minor hockey, take him to the game and stay to watch, or lend a hand if it is needed. Don't go home and leave your son with no one to cheer him on. Hockey games are entertaining, especially when your own son is out there trying his hardest, and he will try harder if he knows that MOM and DAD are watching. B/WMH Big Mac's lose in final The Brooklin-Whitby Mac- Donalds minor bantams played in the bantam tourna- ment in Port Perry on the week-end, and got to the "B" division final only to lose out to the Brooklin-Whitby Mc- Concrete victorious The Brooklin Concrete Ju- veniles defeated the strong Port Perry Juveniles 3-1 re- cently as they got great goal- tending from .Craig Broni- shewski, and single goals from Ted Lintner, Tim Briscoe and Russ Sorichetti. Cormack Blades Major Ban- tams 4-1. Their first.game was a 4-2 loss to the Markham majors. John Jordan and Marty Gallas scored for the Big Mac's. The second gaine for the Brooklin-Whitby minor ban- tams was a 4-2 win over the powerful Ajax major bantams. The Big Mac's got single goals from Dean Seymour, Dave Stocks, Jim Prosser and Marty Gallas for the win. The "B" Divison championship gaine saw the Brooklin-Whitby mi- nor team lose out 4-I to a stronger Brooklin-Whitby ma- jor bantam club. Dan Kemp scored the lone goal for the Big Mac's in the loss. SPONSORED BY RED BARN RESTAURANTS Tiremen drop three key games Bowmanville nip Big Mac's The Brooklin-Whitby Mac- Donalds Big Mac's minor ban- tams dropped a 5-4 decision HARILAID NOVICE STARS TIED FOR FIRST PLACE After outscoring their op- position 11-2 in two games during the week-end, the Brooklin-Whitby Harilaid no- vice stars are tied with Bay Ridges for first place in league standings. The Harilaid stars defeated Bowmanville 3-2 on goals by Warren Smith, David Blacquire and Jeff Westen- hoefer. Their second game was an 8-0 romp over Ajax. Scott Stoneman and David Holding shared the shut-out. Todd Chasczewski led his teammates with three goals, while John Fusco notched two. Singles were scored by Jack Peebles, Warren Smith and Bobby Middleton. to Bowmanville on January 17 in Bowmanville after leading 3-0 in the first period. The Bowmanville team tied the score in the second period, only to see the Big Mac's go ahead 4-3. This lead did not hold up, as the Bowmanville boys were not to be denied. The hometown team cane on strong and scored two un- answered goals in the final period to defeat the "Ham- burger Boys" 5-4. Bill Morrison added an- other shut-out to his ever in- creasing list of hockey ac- complishments on January 21 as the Big Mac's defeated Bay Ridges 4-0 in the Art Thomp- son Arena. Four members of the MacDonalds team scored single markers in the game, Lloyd Connor, Dave William- son, Dan Kemp and Mike Edwards. The Brooklin-Whitby Cana- dian Tire Junior "B" Tiremen dropped three important games in the past week as. they were defeated 9-6 by Wexford in the Brooklin Are- na on Jan. 18, 10-5 by the Belleville Bobcats in Belle- ville on Jan. 19, and 7-5 by the Peterborough Lions on Jan. 211. The loss to Wexford was the result of a lot of sloppy play in front of the two 'Whitby netminders Kimi Crouch and Tony Cannella. The Whitby club led 3-2 at the end of the first period, but 39 seconds into the sec- ond period they were down 4-3. At this point, Coach Berwick removed Cannella and put in Kim Crouch. The second period ended with the Tiremen trailing 7-5. The local team tried to get back into the game in the final frame, but the Wexford boys just kept pressing on until they increased their lead to 9-6. The final goal was scored into the empty net at 19:30. Mike Harper led the Tire- men with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Steve Dabous had 2 goals and I assist, Doug Wood added the other 2 goals. Wex- ford outshot Whitby 43-38 in the gaie, and took 5 of 9 minor penalties handed out. The four minor penalties to Whitby were all called against defensernan Les Spanger. In Belleville on Friday, the score was tied 2-2 at the end of the opening period. The Whitby club was in the gaine up until the 14:35 mark of the second period with the score tied 4-4. At this point the Tiremen picked up 2 mi- nor penalties within one min- ute and seven seconds. As a result of the two penalties, the Whitby team found them- selves down 6-4. At 18:40 of the second the Bobcats had a three on one break that re- sulted in the score increasing to 7-4 in favour of Belleville. The Bobcats added three more goals in the final twenty minutes, while the Tiremen managed only one. Two of the goals for Belleville in the last period were scored twenty seconds apart as the Tireien were short-handed as a result of a double minor penalty to Les Spanger. The Tiremen had 7 minor penalties in tie game, with the Bobcats picking up goals on 4 of them. The Tire- men were again outshot 43- 38. John Sedgley fired two goals for the Tiremen, while Doug Wood added a goal and three assists. Other Whitby goals were scored by Randy Dickson and Don Nicholson. The Peterborough Lions handed the Tiremen a 7-5 loss in Peterborough on January 21 as Bob Wasson fired three goals to lead the first place Lions. Peterborough led 2-1 at the end of the first period, but increased their lead to 7-3 in the second. Tony Can- nella replaced Kim Crouch in the Whitby net for the final twenty minutes, and while he managed to hold the Lions off the scoresheet, his teammates were only able to beat the Lions goaltender for two goals to bring the score up to 7-5. Don Nicholson led the Tire- men with 3 goals, while singles were added by Steve Dabous and Doug Wood. The next game for the Tiremen is slated for the Brooklin Arena on January 25 when they host the Oshawa Legionaires. Gaine time is 7:45 p.m. January 26 the Tiremen go to the Civic Audi- toriumn in Oshawa to play a return gaine against the Le- gionaires. Game time in Osha- wa is 8:00 p.n.
