PACI 6, TIIURSDAY, AuGusTr 24,1972, WIIITBY FREE' PRlUSS ..WHAT MAPI Have you ever noticed how rnuch the land changes when you sec it froni the water? Ail the landmnarks that seerned so fanilijar suddenly disap- pear when you try to find thern frorn the water. That's why you're supposed to carry marine maps s0 you can plot a course by the compass and the stars and ail that, but you're flot supposed to get lost.... Last weekend 1 went out on a friend's boat for a day trip to the 30,000 islands. As we were prepar- ing for the outing 1 noticed he took a large marine chart and spread it out on the living room floor. I figured that with such acute research and ail the me- ticulous preparation we couldn't possibly go wrong. The boat was the cutest little thing you ever saw. My fiend and his wife had papered the inside of the cabin with fiery red wallpaper and the out- side was painted blue and white. 'Very patrîotic', I thought. The huil was steel which tends to sink like a rock, but I thought I should dismiss that from my mind instantly or become a bundle of nerves the rest of the trip. The engine sounded pretty good so after a few minutes warm up I shoved the boat away from the dock and jumped in. We backed ail the way out of the dock area. It seems I pushed the boat in the wrong direction. I hoped it wasn't a sign of worse things to corne. K. <Steve) Hanson Suite 501, Bell Tower, Oshawa Cenfre Oshawa, Ontario 1 would like to Inow more about your SECURITY GRAPH: NAME.................................... ADDRESS .............................. We- pulled into the dock for gas and ýthe owner of the marina drove down to the gas' pump on a wide-tired mini bike. lt's quite a walk from the- gas pump on the dock to the office at the marina so, lie figured it wo uld be quicker and casier on the legs if lie drove a miini bike. 1Ilhappenced to mention to the owner that thc bikc looked as il' it would be good in swampy ground. He agreed but said it wasn't worth a damt in the water. lHe explained that the old mini bike lad a foot brake but tce new one liad a brake on the hand lebar. The first day lie drove the new bike out to Uhe gas pump on the dock hc hit the foot brake which, of course, wasn't there. Botthe bike and rider sailed off the end of the dock into the water. With my usual poîiteness and tact 1 burst out iaughing Mhen hie told mie this sad tale. We paid the bill for the gas and left. Once underway 1 figured 1 had better do a stint in the gallcy so 1 made sandwiches and drinks for niy buddy and the girls. Because the boat is fairly narrow it tends to rock so it took a bit of getting used to trying to butter a slice of bread that kept sliding away fromi me. We had been out over an hour and a haîf w lien my buddy, Jack, decided to head for Lost Bay. There was something about the namne which made me a littie pessimistie about even finding the place and sure enough pretty soon Jack announced, We lost Lost Bay!" 1 said, "Why don't you clicck it out on that big marine map?" Jack replied, "l can't!" 1 said, "»Oh???" Jack explained, "I left the map at home in the living room. 1 neyer take it out on the boat because 1 don't want to get it wet!" A little bewildered 1 looked around for a Boy Scout compass or a sextant or something but all 1 could sec were a fcw ernpty botîles. The look on even the dog's face did nothing to instill d feeling of confidence. We suspected what 1 was trying to not to think about. Well we weren't exactly lost - we just couldn't find Lost Bay. Once you get up into the 30,000 Islands you can't navigate by watching the shore- fne because there are just too many islands to keep track of unless you are a native of the area. After much diligent searching and a couple of forays into shallow water we quite accidently camne upon Lost Bay. It scems nobody else could find it cither because there wasn't another soul there. We had a good swim in a bay that might have been in any tropical island and then we headed for home. Probably thc part that surprised mie the most is that we made it even without a map.
