PAGE 2. THURSDAY, AUGUIST 24, 1972, WIJITJ3Y VE R Would Step -B Politicians Forward Those of you who have been driving west on Dundas Street lately and noticed the road seems ra- ther cluttered with gravel shouldn't blarne the men who drive the sweeper truck. The blame has to fall first on Canada Buildling Materials on Hopkins Street and secondly on The Town of Whitby. According to the Whitby Police, Canada Building Materials has been phoned and told about the mess but there is still dried cernent ail along the curb on Dundas Street between Fîopkins Street and Annes Street. In the city of Toronto there is a bylaw that re- quires trucks to have screens on . thus preventing the contents from spilling out onto the street and creating a traffiec hazard-not to mention pollution. .ilhirty-two miles east of Toronto in Whitby it would seem that we don't have such a law concern- ing littering. If there is indeed a law that says cernent trucks cannot be overfilled, causing cernent to pour from the trucks ail over the highway, the law is flot being enforced. A recent query to an officiai of the Whitby Po- lice Departrnent assured us that the problemn had been deait with and Canada Building Materials were no longer dumping excess cernent ail over Dundas St. At the time of this writing the mess has not been cleaned up and, if anything, is even worse than ever. For a bike rider the problern is rather acute as the size of the cernent is large enoughi to cause a rider to fali. If the fail is outward into traffic the resuit will be injury and possible death. The present Town administration or Town Council don't seemn able to cope with Canada Build- ing Materials and the rness,so maybe there is sorne- one out there who would like to take a crack at being a politician and get the problern solved. If so, you have our blessing and we wish you Good Luck! THE WHIIBY FREE PRESS (Volce ot the County Town.) Hometown paper of Whitby, Brooklin, Myrtle and Ashburri. New R@of For Drooklln Arena If rurnours circuiating the area have any foundation, the Brooklin Arena instead of being condernned as lias been suspected, could be re- paired. A plan for a IiCw roof with steel guards was, according to our informer, decided upon ait a Monday nighit meeting of council's cornrittee of the whole. In checking out the possibility of proposed repairs to Brooklin Arena, the Free Press con- tacted Councillor Gerry Cox, Chairrnan of the Recreation Comrnittee. Councillor Cox neither denied nor confirrned rumour. "I arn not at liberty to say anything until I have seen the report expected on the arena on September Il,"" he said. The latest rurnour replaces one which indicated the report would recomrnend the closure of Brook- lin Arena, which is now the only ice facility in the entire arnalgamated town. The Whitby Community Arena was closed f»our weeks ago following a report submnitted by Totten, Sims and Hubieki. New provincial gov- ernment rulings forced the sudden closure, and the same fate is fcared for the rernaining arena. FIND5 IMT A MAORCRI51S 51TAND5 IN FPCNT OF HIM.....
