The Iris by Sid Morris Perhaps th!is past spring you saw some bearded-iris, but didn't have the right place for them. Well now is the t im e when iris should be divided and moved. The iris is a hardy perennial that prefers a slightly alkaline, loam-type soil, but will do just as weil in either sandor clay. The bed for the iris must be in a well drained area as the rhi- zomeswill rot. Iris prefer full sun, but will grow in semi-shade. Toestablishnew plants, digupan old clumpcarefullywitha garden fork. Re- move the soil so you can examine the r h i z o m e s (root-like s truc ture of the bearded-iris). You should select only the healthy, plump rhizomes for re- planting. Use a sharp knife to cut out onlynew sections of rhizomes, trimming back the leaves to resemble a fan. When preparing the new bed for the iris you shoul d dig in well1 rotted manure or other organic material. The soit shouldbeworked to a depth of approxi- mately ten inches. The rhizomes should be planted 12-15 inches apart, in groups of ab ou t three rhizomes to a group. Plant as shallow as is possible with no more than three inches of soil for cover. Firm theplants into the soil by watering thoroughl1 y. To get the best quality blooms it is important to fertil ize in early spring and a g a i n two or three weeks after they flower. A fertilizer that is low in ni- trogen but relatively high in potassium and phosphorous is ideal; example 5- 10-10. This should be applied at a rate ofaboutone pound per 500 square feet. Apest thatbothers the iris is the iris borer. The iris borer looks like an overgrown maggot and lives in the rhi- zomes of the iris. It can however, be controlled fairly easily by spraying with Malathion in the spring when the leaves are approximately 5 inches high. If you work with the public, Choose a remote location, far away from ringing telephones and a strict regimen, rather than a boisterous attitude of continuai partying. Lie o : Julv23-to Aug. 22 Excitement abounds in connection with your work. You should experience a more mature viewpoint at this time. You will possibly hear frorii people at a distance. Seek to maintain a balanced diet and relax at home duriJng this seven day period. V i r g o: Aug. 23 to.Sept. 22, This would not appear to be a favourable time for a trip. Put necessary things first, like the pay- mentof bills. On the23rd and 24th, the Sun enters Virgo and you will experience the same element of confusion. After the 26th things should be more clear and you will have the go ahead sigrh for the next two or three weeks. Continued on Page 13 ,letteres to. theeit box 2,06? hitby-- I read an ad by a chemical company the other day - full page, glossy and coloured - saying that the reason your lawn wasn't like a bowling green was - you guessed it - you didn't use their wonderful chemical poisons. Suchastatementisnothing but a lie, and if you are over 5-years-old, you will have realized by now that grass is pretty tough. Grass will grow through your driveway, through concrete, and if you stand still half an hour, through your shoes. Grass as we all know will grow on the roof in the eavestrough, on top of walls, inside walls and between sidewalk stones. If they had put it in the pyramids it would likely have just sat there for a few thousand y e a r s, and when they opened up, zoom ail over the desert. Of course then we wouldn't have had movies about the desert fox and el Amamein. However there is one place that is difficult if not impossible to get grass to grow - that bare patch on the lawn. The answer is to make a flower bed there. Thereal reason for grass not grow- ingwell isnot that it hasn't been fed ail thatvwonderful chemical, but that grass blades, so if you are cutting it j to 1 inchhigh, youare notallowing itto make good root growth. 113y feeding grass on the surface you are encouraging sur- humour face roots, so that when hot weather prevails you can't water. The surface roots die out for lack of water and be- cause there is no shade to protect them from the sun. Ideally, grass should be cut 2- to 3 inches long and it will develop a deep rooting system, build up lush growth and squeeze out any crabgrass.
